Air quality in Salford
Each year, air pollution in the UK affects our health, vegetation and buildings. The people most at risk are the young and old and those with heart or lung problems.
In Salford we are working to reduce air pollution by visiting factories, encouraging cleaner modes of travel, reducing the impact of new developments and investigating complaints of air pollution.
We also monitor pollution in air and give up to date information on pollution levels in Salford and Greater Manchester.
The main pollutants of concern in Salford are nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM10). The main sources of pollution are transport, followed by industry. Our homes and offices are also important sources of pollution.
Salford City Council is constantly working to improve air quality across the city through Local Air Quality Management, for example:
- Air Quality Review and Assessments
- Declaration of Air Quality Management Areas
- Publication of an Air Quality Action Plan
Salford City Council also regulates atmospheric pollution from industrial processes under the Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999.
