Rats
Environmental Services provide this service for pests considered to be a risk to public health or food safety including rats, house mice, cockroaches and fleas. A service is also provided to control pests that may become a nuisance in houses such as a wide range of beetles, silverfish, earwigs and wasps. Our pages also contain a guide to charges.

Recycling collections and recycling centres
Salford has a free door-to-door collection service for your recyclable materials. We will provide you with a free container to help you reduce what you produce. This will be collected on your normal refuse collection day. Look out for details of our Christmas tree recycling service.

Register of electors
The Salford register of electors (the electoral roll) is a record of everyone eligible to vote who lives within the city. You do not have to vote on election day (it is your democratic choice), but you are required by law to register. The council is required to keep two versions of the current electoral register. These are the full register and an edited register.

Residents parking permits
Residents or other road users parking in areas designated as having a residents' parking scheme must display the relevant permit so that it can be read from outside the vehicle otherwise a penalty charge notice may be issued. In some instances a parking dispensation may be issued.

Rights of way
Salford City Council's Rights of Way Officer is responsible for preparing and updating what is known as the Definitive Right of Way Network, including the processing of any legal orders that may affect the network of rights of way.

Road blocks or other obstructions
Highways must be kept clear of wilful obstructions. In most cases, Salford City Council, as the highway authority, has the power to serve notice on a person who commits an offence of wilful obstruction on the highway.

Road gritting
Salford City Council carries out a regular winter road gritting programme. Work is organised according to a defined schedule of priority highways that need to be gritted. The service consists of five scheduled routes maintaining 300km of highways in Salford.

Road safety
Salford City Council has a team of road safety officers who visit pre-school groups, primary and secondary schools to provide information on all aspects of road safety.

Road traffic accidents (cleaning up afterwards)
Salford City Council has 11 teams who clean Salford's streets, and around local shops and schools in their designated work area. This activity involves litter picking, plus general cleaning and sweeping of streets. Teams also deal with the aftermath of any road traffic accidents or reports of dead animals.

Roads - cleaning
Salford City Council has a legal duty to clear litter and refuse from the public places for which it is responsible, such as streets, parks, playgrounds and pedestrianised areas. This includes the removal of abandoned vehicles and dead animals, as well as gritting roads and unblocking drains and sewers.

Roads - crossing patrols
There are around 90 school crossing patrols operating throughout the city of Salford. School crossing patrols - or lollipop men and women, as they are affectionately known - are there to help both children and adults to cross the roads.

The maintenance of street lighting in Salford is carried out by City Highways. The service can also be used to report damaged traffic signs and bollards.

Traffic calming schemes are highlighted either by enquiries from ward councillors or local residents, and by investigation of the accident records and analysis of the volume, type and speed of the traffic using a particular area.
