Backs Campaign

Better Backs Campaign

Back pain and injury at work campaign aimed to reduce the

  • incidence of back pain and upper limb disorders (ULDs) caused or made worse by work
  • impact of back pain and ULDs
  • number of working days lost due to back pain and ULDs

Salford Environment Directorate are continuing to work in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), other Local Authorities and stakeholders to continue with the national campaign tackling back pain in the workplace. Back ache is a fairly common problem in the UK. In fact 80% of adults will suffer back pain at some point during their adult life.

Better Backs promoted sensible workplace precautions that reduce the risk of back pain. The campaign emphasised the positive benefits of staying active with back pain. At the same time it encouraged employers and employees to work together to help people return to normal activities including work. Most people manage to continue working, or return to work within a few days or weeks, despite their pain. Trying to reduce the pain by avoiding your daily activities can lead to a much longer recovery time and long-term back problems. The longer someone is off work with back pain, the less likely it is that they will return to work.

Employers and employees can find out more information on this topic on the HSE's Back Pain section.
