Salford City Stadium and Port Salford
This is a site for major change and investment. It runs for about two miles from Peel Green roundabout (M60 junction) towards Irlam. There are two significant schemes for the site bringing in £435 million of investment and creating over 1,000 jobs. It is one of only 25 designated strategic employment sites in the North West.
Salford City Stadium
A new state of the art stadium is being built at Barton. The stadium will be home to Salford City Reds rugby club and will be ready in time for the 2012 super league season. More than that, it is a community stadium designed to be used by residents and visitors alike.
There will be two community outdoor pitches, one grass and one artificial surface, changing rooms, and 600 spaces for car parking. A banqueting suite that can accommodate 750 people, office space over two floors will also be available for hire to community groups and public sector organisations. The number of visitors for the first year including match day attendees is estimated at 100,000.
Salford City Council gave planning permission for the new stadium on the 70 acre site in August 2010. An outline application for 21,000 square metres of non-food retail was also approved in principle as part of the proposals. £26 million is being invested in the first phase of works. This will develop a 12,000 seat stadium with all the community facilities. Works started on this in May 2010, with initial land preparation, and will be complete in December 2011.
A further investment will see the stadium expand to 15,000 seats and finally to reach full capacity at 20,000. Retail development is expected at a future stage.

Port Salford
Planning permission was granted for a multi-modal rail freight terminal in 2009. This £400 million development will take freight traffic off roads by connecting road, rail and canal. The development of the 175 acres site will employ up to 1,170 staff and support up to 2,350 job regionally.
There will be an inland, international, two berth port on the Manchester Ship Canal. This will link to a rail freight terminal with 150,000 square metres of warehousing and 40 acres of container storage capacity.
Providing an alternative transport mode and reducing reliance on road borne freight, Port Salford will support an estimated £73m to £83m in Gross Value Added (GVA) to Salford each year.
