Having trouble with bathing

You can reduce the risk of falling, slipping or getting stuck in the bath by following some simple rules:
- Use non-slip mats on the bathroom floor and in the bath
- Run the bath and check the temperature before getting in
- Make sure that everything you need is close at hand - some people find a bath shelf helps
- Long handled scrubbers mean you don't need to twist so much to wash your back
- Remove the plug and let the water drain before you get out of the bath
- Have towels close by so that you can get dry quickly.
Think about keeping the bathroom door unlocked and only having a bath when someone else is in the house.
Generally, showers are considered to be safer than baths.
Equipment
You can buy special bathing aids from high street stores, online or mail order catalogues. These include:
- Non-slip mats
- Grab rails
- Bath seats and lifts
Contact us if you want to find out more about different types of equipment to make bathing easier and safer. Helping Hands may put grab rails up for you, at very little cost. You can also contact Disabled Living, an independent charity to buy equipment and advice.
If you have some tips that help you with bathing, let us know and we can publish them here.
