The BBC at MediaCityUK

The Doctor meets Salford schoolchildren at The Quays

BBC North

The BBC are committed to making programmes and content for the whole of the UK - to this end the BBC chose Salford as their new home in the north and will be moving departments up from London to MediaCityUK from 2011.

The main departments that are moving to MediaCityUK are:

  • BBC Sport
  • BBC Children's
  • Radio 5 Live
  • Learning
  • Future, Media and Technology

Plus, as recently announced, BBC Breakfast and BBC Three will be based at MediaCityUK from 2012.

The BBC North apprenticeship scheme is now up and running. Over 100 entry-level positions will be available over the coming year so if you are aged 16 or over and have left full time education, look out for your chance to work at the new offices at MediaCityUK. The first round of applications have now closed but look out for more opportunities coming up.

The BBC are now looking for new Young Ambassadors. If you are aged 16 to 19, the BBC are looking for local young people to work in a variety of customer-facing roles, welcoming and looking after their guests and facilities. We need people who can represent the BBC positively and enthusiastically to visitors and our local communities and who can also represent their local community positively to BBC staff and visitors. The closing date is 10 February. Find out more and apply online.

Be in the audience!

The MediaCityUK studios are already up and running and there will be plenty of chances for you to be part of the action by registering for free tickets for a range of shows to be filmed there over the coming years. Visit the BBC audiences website or call the BBC Ticket Line on 0370 901 1227. Good luck!

As part of The Quays Open Day, the BBC's Big Birthday Bash will be taking place on Saturday 18 February. To celebrate the tenth birthday of CBBC and CBeebies, a whole day of fun and games will be taking place at MediaCityUK including visits from Mr Bloom, Andy and Cerrie and Tracey Beaker! Tickets for pre-booked events are now all fully booked but there are drop-in events throughout the day from 10.00am to 4.00pm.

BBC Outreach

The BBC is already making friends with its new neighbours in Salford and there will be loads more opportunities to get involved.

Salford's pupils have also been getting involved with BBC School Report. In March 2010, Molly and Sean from Harrop Fold School interviewed David Cameron.

Two days later, they were on Radio Manchester’s breakfast programme and also helped to present the School Report Radio programme from Manchester with BBC 5 Live.

Even the new Doctor Who came to Salford in his Tardis in 2010, to let Salford's schoolchildren have one of the first glimpses of the new series and to meet the new Doctor and his assistant.

The Doctor returned to MediaCityUK in 2011 in an exciting interactive adventure called Crash of the Elysium as part of the Manchester International Festival, while younger visitors took part in CBBC's Music Boxes on the plaza.
