What is a beacon council?
The Government's beacon council scheme has been running since 1999 and is intended to improve local government nationally by providing opportunities for "leading lights" to share their experience of improving services to local communities by focusing on specific or cross-cutting service areas that are important to people in their day-to-day lives.
Beacon status is not just about recognising excellence. Successful applicants must also demonstrate a real determination to share their good practice and experience.
The criteria for awarding beacon status are:
- excellence within specific or cross-cutting service areas
- clear vision and strategy
- effective partnership working, and
- a learning culture and willingness to innovate
This is at the heart of what central and local government together are seeking to achieve - high quality local services for everyone. Thus the beacon council scheme provides a successful, and very positive way of recognising achievement and best practice.
