Blue badges

Blue badge holders can generally park closer to where they need to. Blue badge holders can be either the driver or the passenger of a vehicle they travel in.

In England, blue badge holders may generally park:

  • On single or double yellow lines for up to three hours, except where there is a ban on loading or unloading
  • At 'on-street' parking meters and pay-and-display machines for free and for as long as they need to

Who can get a blue badge?

Blue badges are for people who are disabled, and have mobility difficulties.

There are two types of blue badge:

Lost or stolen badges

If your badge has been lost or stolen, you must report this to the police. You will be issued with a crime reference number on official police stationery, which you must submit to us.

Tackling abuse

Salford City Council takes misuse and fraud of blue badges very seriously. We work together with our partners, i.e. Salford Parking Services, other local authority parking services, blue badge departments and the police, to tackle abuse.

The badge is issued to you, and will have your  details on it. It should not be displayed on a vehicle if you are not the driver or passenger at the time of use.

It is an offence to park a vehicle in a designated disabled parking bay without a valid blue badge being clearly displayed. The badge must be displayed the correct way up, otherwise you will receive a parking ticket. As of March 2011, parking tickets cost £35.00 (if paid within 14 days of issue) or £70.00 (if paid after this time).

Photographs

Applications must have two passport sized photographs, which you should sign and date on the back.

If you find it difficult to use a photo booth, there is a facility at the blue badge office, where you can have your photograph taken in Disability Discrimination Act compliant surroundings.
