Bridgewater Way
The Bridgewater Way project is managed by the Bridgewater Canal Company and is a regeneration project creating a continuous 65 kilometres (39 mile) leisure route for walkers and cyclists along the historic Bridgewater Canal.
The improvement works includes:
- Making it easier to get on the towpath and improving the surface so that cyclists, walkers, wheelchairs users and those with pushchairs can all enjoy the canal.
- New seating.
- Better signage and information boards so you will know where you are, and be able to find out about the fascinating history and nature along the Bridgewater Canal.
By summer 2011 2.4 miles of the 4.9 miles of towpath in Salford have been improved from Patricroft Bridge through to Worsley Village. Once improved, the towpath becomes part of Sustrans route 82, providing excellent links into Manchester City Centre, Leigh and towards Wigan, Warrington and Runcorn. The canal links to the Leeds Liverpool canal at Leigh and the Rochdale canal at Manchester.
The map of the Bridgewater Canal can be downloaded below, highlighting the improved sections of the canal towpath.
The improvements in Salford have been funded through a combination of investment from Salford City Council and Bridgewater Canal Company. Future phases of towpath improvements will be undertaken subject to availability of funding.
