Budget consultation 2010/11 - what does it mean?

Your money, your choice

During the budget consultation exercise you told us your top priorities for council spending in the next 12 months. These were: the maintenance of roads and pavements and crime and community safety, followed by health and social care services and youth services and facilities. These views have been taken into account by Salford City Council when setting its budgets for 2010/11 and they will be used to inform and develop its budget strategy for the future.

Salford residents will not be asked to pay more for their council services this year after a zero per cent rise in council tax was approved by councillors.

Over the past 11 years, Salford has seen the 18th lowest cumulative council tax rise nationally. The city also has one of the lowest average council tax bills in the country, 280th out of 326 authorities in England.

Comments received from the consultation varied widely, although highway maintenance is one of the most commented on, such as:

  • The number of pot holes
  • Damaged roads
  • Roads and pavements in disrepair
  • Ban parking on kerbs and pavements
  • Make companies who dig up roads accountable
  • Traffic control
  • Gritting of pavements and side roads as well as main roads (bad weather)

Did you know?

Only 41.4% of the money used to provide council services is funded from the collection of council tax? The other 58.6% comes from central government via the redistribution of business rates and provision of a revenue support grant.
