Bulky items

Furniture collection by Salford Community Transport's 'New to You'

Give your furniture a new lease on life!

Salford City Council in partnership with Salford Community Transport ‘New to You' can now provide residents with a free collection service for any re-usable bulky waste items such as beds, suites, drawers, washing machines and tumble dryers.

Salford Community Transport ‘New to You' is a charity which collects good quality unwanted furniture for the re-supply to families and individuals in need and will collect any reusable household items free of charge.

What items can be collected free

  • Beds
  • Three piece suites
  • Washing machines
  • Tumble dryers
  • Wardrobes
  • Chest of drawers
  • Dressing and dining tables

To be eligible, your bulky waste items need to be in good condition and not flat packed, damaged or in need of dismantling for transport.

How to arrange collection?

To arrange a collection or for more information please call Salford Community Transport ‘New to You' on 0161 736 8852 or email: salford@communitytransport.org. Alternatively, you can also donate your unwanted furniture at the Lumns Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Disposal of non re-usable bulky waste

Unfortunately, Salford Community Transport cannot collect items that are not re-useable such as non fire retardant suites, mattresses, other soft furnishings, fridges and wooden items in need of repair.

In this case, the council can collect up to four items of bulky waste from you for a cost of £22.50 per collection (excluding builder's rubble, bricks, concrete, paving flags and other heavy items and gas bottles).

For more than four items or to arrange a collection from commercial premises, one of our environmental co-ordinators will visit you to quote an individual price. We will endeavour to remove the items within 7 to 14 days including weekends. Exceptions for OAPs on council tax or housing benefit (up to four items only).

For more information or to arrange a collection please us on 0161 909 6500 or email environment@salford.gov.uk.

Items requiring special handling arrangements

Please be aware that the following items require a separate collection (which may include an additional charge) as there are restrictions for either legal reasons or because the items are classed as hazardous. These are:

  • Asbestos
  • Fridges/freezers
  • Tyres
  • Gas canisters
  • Fluorescent lights
  • Sun bed tubes

Please call 0161 909 6500 for more information on how to dispose of these items or visit the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority website.
