Cadishead Way - Stage 2

Cadishead Way bypass opened Friday 16 September - 35 weeks ahead of schedule and well within budget.
The project commenced in February 2004 and was scheduled to take 120 weeks to complete. However, due to re-sequencing of the works, the bypass was completed within 85 weeks.
The bypass will ease congestion by diverting traffic away from the centre of Cadishead and providing an alternative route to the A57 Liverpool Road, between Brinell Drive, Irlam and Salford’s boundary with Warrington at Glazebrook.
The £11.3m project involved the building of 2.4km of single carriageway through difficult ground conditions and required the construction of a large bridge through a disused railway embankment. This bridge will cater for the reopening of the railway in future years. The project also involved embankment strengthening as well as the building of a retaining wall to support the road as it passes very close to the Manchester Ship Canal.
Birse Civils Ltd won the contract and have worked closely with the city council’s highway engineers to refine the original design.
More information can be viewed in the quarterly reports, along with photographs of the progress made to date.

Cadishead Way Stage 2 has also received several awards and commendations, including the 2006 "Gold" Award presented by the Considerate Constructors Scheme
