Environmental health

The work of Environmental Health officers includes both food safety, and health and safety.

Food safety work involves the routine inspection of food businesses from small retail shops to pubs, restaurants and food manufacturers. You can view their hygiene scores from our "scores on the doors page". We also investigate complaints, accidents and food poisoning notifications.

This part of the web site gives information and advice to businesses about the services we provide.

The service is responsible for enforcing food hygiene and health and safety laws in around 4250 commercial premises within the city. We aim to visit a set number in any one year - some more than once.

We enforce a number of Acts of Parliament and many sets of regulations. These laws cover such things as:

  • unclean food premises
  • smoking within enclosed spaces
  • unfit or unwholesome food on sale or display
  • unsafe food hygiene practices
  • unsafe places of work
  • unsafe pieces of work equipment
  • unsafe work activities
  • lack of welfare facilities at work
  • inadequate training of food handling staff and employees for the job in hand
  • illness caused through suspect food
  • illness or accidents resulting from work activities
  • issuing of licenses for example ear piercing, street trading consents and pet shops

How do we do this?

We can investigate food proprietors and employers and prosecute those who break the law. Here are some of the things we do on a regular basis to try to prevent people breaking the law:

  • inspect food shops, cafes, restaurants, takeaways etc
  • check on the safety of food on sale by sampling
  • inspect places of work, such as offices, shops, warehouses and many others
  • generally we do not give notice of our intention to inspect
