Salford Award for Food Hygiene Excellence
All food businesses in the Salford are assessed for the above award as part of our routine programmed food hygiene inspection, carried out by officers from the council.
Salford's Environment Directorate provides to the public on our "Scores on the Doors pages" where you can view a food premises current hygiene score. Also on request a copy of the Salford food business' current hygiene inspection summary report can be provided. The summary report details the level of Award issued to the business and a summary of the last food hygiene inspection for those premises. You can request a copy of the latest food hygiene inspection summary report for any of Salford's food premises by completing the form of the food safety request a report page.
The new 5 star award (launched early 2007) is based on a grading system for compliance with food safety management, structure and hygiene and results in premises receiving an Award from zero (poor) to five stars(excellent). As a guide:-
- A premises with zero to 1 Star demonstrates virtually no awareness of "Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point" (HACCP), limited monitoring of critical control points and is poor in relation to structure and cleanliness. These premises are likely to be subject to further formal action in terms of Hygiene Improvement Notices, Simple Cautions and Prosecutions to secure future improvements.
- A premises with 2 to 3 Stars demonstrates an awareness of HACCP and routinely monitoring the critical control points, but have limited documentation. The premises must be generally fair in relation to structure and cleanliness
- A four star premises shows an ability to demonstrate an understanding of HACCP and have good to very good food safety management systems. The premises must also have a very good structure and cleanliness throughout
- A five star premises has a fully documented HACCP based system that has been successfully operated for a number of years and includes a system of self-inspection and verification coupled with excellent structure and hygiene practices. To assist businesses demonstrate to officers how they achieve this standard the Directorate has produced some standard records and forms (available below).

All businesses on completion of the food hygiene inspection receive an inspection summary and AWARD certificate stating the category of award from Zero through to Five Stars. Businesses are requested to display the Award and it is valid until the next inspection date stated on the certificate and inspection summary. If businesses prefer a coloured, framed certificate then this can be arranged at a cost of £20.
Businesses who receive a poor star rating are given advice on how to improve their food safety standards.
The award is likely to be downgraded where standards deteriorate and are not maintained.
