Street traders
Salford City Council operates a street trading consent scheme under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 for all street trading activities such as hot food vehicles, ice cream vans and flower stalls. This page outlines the scheme and contains information that will be useful to you if you are considering becoming a street trader.
Street trading without a valid consent anywhere in the city renders the trader liable to prosecution.
Before a consent to trade in the city of Salford will be issued, every person operating a mobile food vehicle or stall will be required to present their vehicle for a food hygiene and health and safety inspection.
It is also now a legal requirement that all food handlers receive some form of supervision, instruction and/or training commensurate with their work activities. Details are available for download about training below.
It is also advisable when considering a regular site for your mobile that you liaise with the council's Highways Department on 0161-793 3845 to discuss your proposals to ensure you will not be contravening highway legislation and that you are not trading from a prohibited street.
Additionally, if you intend to trade from one place for any specific time you will need to ascertain who owns the piece of land and obtain the land owner's permission. Even though you have obtained a consent to trade from the council, the land owner can request that you remove your vehicle/trailer should he/she so wish.
The current fee to trade is £556 per annum (for example 1 April to 31 March); Please note that refunds are not given, although traders at organised events can apply for a short term consent (approximate charge £56 with a maximum duration of one month).
For further advice, please do not hesitate to contact the Environment Directorate on 0161-737 0551 or email environment@salford.gov.uk.
The Ice Cream Alliance also provide some additional guidance on the safe handling and service of ice cream.
