Hackney carriage driver
A driver of a hackney carriage vehicle must be licensed with the licensing section.
This office deals with all applications for hackney carriage drivers (more commonly know as taxi drivers). All applicants will have to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) form so that all previous and current convictions are disclosed to the licensing office.
The CRB form must be completed in person at the licensing office. You will also need to bring your driving licence (a full licence must have been held for at least 12 months), your passport or birth certificate and proof of your home address, along with the fee for the CRB check* (£31 for a standard check and £36 for an enhanced check). A medical form must also be completed (unless you already hold a PCV or HGV licence). Two written references must be provided along with the application form. One of the referees must be a professional person and none of the referees must be related to the applicant.
Once the CRB check has been undertaken and returned to the licensing office then arrangements will be made for applicants to undertake a byelaws and local knowledge test.
The Licensing Section also deals with complaints and enforcement regarding hackney carriage drivers. The licence fee for a hackney carriage drivers licence is £240 for a three year badge and £120 for a renewal
Private hire driver
Any person who wishes to drive a private hire vehicle within the city of Salford must obtain a licence to do so by the licensing section.
This licensing office deals with all applications for private hire drivers. All applicants will have to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) form so that all previous and current convictions are disclosed to the licensing office.

You will also need to bring your driving licence (a full licence must have been held for at least 12 months), your passport or birth certificate and proof of your home address, along with the fee for the CRB check* (£31 for a standard check and £36 for an enhanced check. A medical form must also be completed (unless you already hold a PCV or HGV licence). Two written references must be provided along with the application, one of the referees must be a professional person and none of the referees must be a relative to the applicant
Once the CRB check has been undertaken and returned to the licensing section, arrangements will then be made for the applicant to undertake a conditions and local knowledge test. The fee for the test is £15.
The licensing section also deals with complaints and enforcement regarding private hire drivers. The licence fee for a private hire drivers licence is £251 and will last for three years. The fee for a renewal is £125 that will also last for three years.
