Game dealers

The Game Act 1831 required shops that sell game to be licensed by the local authority. Game is defined under the Act as hares, pheasants, partridges, grouse, heath or moor game, etc.

From the 1st August 2007 in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Game) Order 2007, the Game Act 1831 and the Deer Act 1991 have been amended and the Game Licences Act 1860 repealed, to

  • remove the requirement to hold a game licence in order to take or kill game;
  • remove the requirement to hold a local authority licence and an excise licence (dealing licences) in order to deal in game; and
  • remove the restrictions on dealing in game birds and venison during the close season,

permitting game to be sold by everyone all year round provided that the animal in question was lawfully killed.

The Game Act 1831 was an historical piece of legislation and simply involved carrying out the usual checks associated with food businesses (cleanliness, temperature control, etc). The licence stated who is authorised to sell game and required the ‘shop keeper’ to display the company name, together with the following words "Licensed to deal in Game."
