In Salford, the 'licensing authority' is Salford City Council.

If you hold any of the following licence types you need to be prepared for new licensing laws which come into effect on 7 February 2005:

  • Alcohol (on and off licences)
  • Public entertainment (annual or occasional)
  • Theatre
  • Cinema
  • Late night refreshment
  • Registered members' clubs

Personal licenceA personal licence authorises a specified person to supply alcohol or allow the supply of alcohol at a premises that has a valid premises licence. Personal licences are valid for ten years.

All applications should be made through the licensing authority during and after the transitional period. An application must be made to the licensing authority where you live and not the licensing authority in the district in which you work.

To make an application for a personal licence you must:

  1. Be over 18 years of age
  2. Not have any relevant or foreign criminal convictions as described in the Act
  3. Possess an approved licensing qualification
  4. Pay the required fee

Personal licences will be needed to supervise the sale of alcohol in any premises - including pubs, off-licences, restaurants and hotels.

Premises licenceA premises licence can be granted for a business supplying alcohol or entertainment or late night refreshment (on or off premises).

To make an application for a premises licence you must:

  1. Submit a plan of the premises
  2. Submit an operating schedule
  3. Give details of the designated premises supervisor
  4. Pay the required fee
  5. Advertise the application in the local press and also on the premises

Club premises certificatesThese certificates will authorise qualifying clubs to use club premises for qualifying club activities.

Qualifying club activities are:

  1. The supply of alcohol by or on behalf of a club to a member for consumption on the premises.
  2. The retail sale of alcohol by or on behalf of a club to a guest of a member for consumption on the premises, and the provision of regulated entertainment by or on behalf of a club for its members or their guests.

All existing licence holders will need to apply to the licensing authority for a new certificate on the same terms as their existing certificate.
