10 top holiday tips
- If you call a tour operator to ask for a brochure to be sent to you, don’t expect it to arrive the next day – they can take at least a week to arrive so give yourself plenty of time.
- Allow yourself a few days to really do your homework. This will enable you to shop around and check out brochures and websites to find the best price.
- Compare the entries in more than one brochure, as different photos and information can help you to obtain a clearer idea of what your resort or hotel is really like.
- Peer-review websites are helpful for making an informed choice about where to stay. For reviews of sun, sea and sand packages, log on to the Holidays Uncovered website, the Holiday Watchdog website, or the TripAdvisor website.
- When you find a holiday you like, compile a list of all the extras you will have to pay, including in-flight meals, flight supplements like luggage charges, extra leg-room, sea view, full board, under occupancy supplements etc, before you begin to compare prices (these are all usually detailed at the rear of the brochure).
- Always read the small print at the back of the brochure, as this will help you work out the real price of your package.
- Child prices or discount offers are snapped up quickly, so be sure to book early – remember that children may attract under-occupancy charges that you’ll need to factor in to the total cost of your holiday.
- If you can be flexible on which airport you fly from, travelling a little further before your holiday could save you a significant amount of money in the long run.
- Make sure you take a copy of the brochure description on holiday with you. It’s always worth knowing what you were promised at the time of booking, especially if you want to make a complaint.
- Book online, as the brochure prices are often discounted for online bookings. If you don’t have access to a computer, perhaps a family member or friend could help. Looking up prices online is also a much easier way to compare the cost of your holiday.
