Resources for careers education and guidance

The CEGNET (a website of the national support programme for careers education) acts as a main vehicle for collecting and disseminating good practice and gives details of the national support programme for careers education. It is probably the most comprehensive website for careers education and information and gives direct access to online careers resources for schools.

CEGNET's online publications for schools service

The online publications for schools service links directly into the Department for Education and Skills' ordering hotline and distribution centre. Users can choose to view, download or order the publications that are relevant to them.

The Prospects Group is a leading supplier of education, youth and community services. Its website gives access to careers information and resources such as Fast Tomato and The Real Game.

The Real Game supports the personal development of students in the curriculum areas of citizenship, PSHE and careers education. It is an interactive, classroom based, programme of three games:

  • The Make It Real Game (years 6 and 7)
  • The Real Game (years 8 and 9)
  • The Be Real game (years 10 and 11)

Fast Tomato is a guidance website for those aged 12 and above, helping students make decisions for their education and career.

The main Fast Tomato system is a 'closed' site, i.e. visitors must have a Fast Tomato 'account'. Each user is provided with a login and randomly generated password. Once in, they can change their login name and password.

Once logged in, the home page provides the visitor with access to the questionnaires, advice pages, personal results, preferences, notes and T-mail messages. Advisers may also login to the administration area using a separate password. Candidates and advisers may log-on to the site from any internet-enabled computer.

As the information builds up it is held in the system and used to generate suggestions and ratings for school subjects, FE and HE courses, educational institutions, career areas and job opportunities, including opportunities in the local area. At the heart of the system is a sophisticated 'matching-engine' that calculates the degree of similarity between students' results and a specific course or career.

A licence for Fast Tomato has now been purchased for all Salford secondary schools and PRUs. For further informnation contact:
