Carers strategy

Carer and service user

This page is a summary of Salford's new Carers Strategy and action plan, up to 2011. It tells you how we plan to make life better for Salford's 20,000 carers.

How do we support carers?

Salford Carers Centre, Age Concern, Crossroads, the city council and many more organisations support carers. Some of the help we give includes emotional support, advice, information and short breaks.

What is the Salford Carers Strategy?

The Strategy was first developed by carers in 1998 and identified a number of themes which carers felt would improve the provision of support and information and give a greater recognition to the issues facing carers in Salford.

The Salford Carers Strategy 2008-2011 is a plan of how we will continue to meet the needs of carers in Salford. We wrote the strategy with carers, who told us about nine important issues:

Information

Primary care (e.g. G.P. Surgeries)

Breaks & Support

Having more control over support and care

Carers assessments

Local support

Reaching all carers

Employment & Training

Working in partnership

What will the Strategy do?

We plan to do even more to support carers and we have agreed dates when we should do these things. Below are just some of the things we plan to do.

We will...

  • Develop and promote Carers Emergency Plans to enable Carers to make plans in the event of an emergency.
  • Establish funding arrangements for a service for Chinese Carers.
  • Engage Pharmacists in identifying and providing advice and information to Carers.
  • Establish a carers link on Salford City Council and Salford Primary Care Trust's websites.
  • Establish a ‘Carer Kite Mark' for Carer Friendly GP surgeries.
  • Explore ways of making information more accessible to carers.
  • Ensure that all carers are offered a free welfare rights check as part of a carers assessment.
  • Identify ways of increasing support for carers in their locality.
  • Develop free courses and training for carers to help them in their caring role and into employment.

Who makes sure these things happen?

We've set up a Carers Strategy Board which includes carers and representatives from carers' services, Salford City Council and Salford Primary Care Trust.
