Cheque fraud alert
It has come to our notice that criminals have attempted to use counterfeit council cheques to fraudulently purchase goods.
The cases we know of are in the London area, where a counterfeit cheque has been offered to sellers of cars or other high value goods, often from a buyer abroad. Sometimes the cheque offered can be of a value greater than the item for sale: this can be a "cashback fraud".
Please be on your guard: if you accept a counterfeit cheque, your bank will “bounce” it and you will receive no payment for any goods you might have released.
If you are offered a Salford City Council cheque in exchange for goods, and the purchaser is not acting for the council, it is unlikely that it is a legitimate purchase. You can contact the council’s payment team on 0161 793 2761 to check if a payment has been issued to you.
If you are suspicious of a prospective purchaser, you should inform the police.
