Salford Children's Book Award

Salford Children’s Book Award 2011

The Salford Children's Book Award (SCBA) is now in its ninth year.

It is designed to introduce 11 to 14 year olds to a range of books and authors and to promote reading for the sheer fun of it.

Books eligible for the award must:

  • have been published in the United Kingdom between January and December the previous year
  • be excellent stand-alone reads
  • have been written by authors living in the UK

The award is facilitated by Salford Schools' Library Service. School-based reading groups are run by high school librarians and/or members of the high school English department during the first term of the school year.

Each year the shortlist has been chosen from a list of titles nominated by high school pupils and librarians, and members of Salford Libraries and Information Service's Children's Team.  Pupils read all of the shortlisted books and vote for their favourite title.

In January an award ceremony is held and the winner is announced. Shortlisted authors attend along with up to two hundred pupils who have taken part in the reading groups. Pupils have a chance to meet the authors and hear them talk about their books.
