How many people do we support?

Every year, the city council supports thousands of Salford residents to stay independent and live at home.

This might be providing homecare, meals, direct payments/personalised budgets equipment/adaptations to help people live independently. Carers also receive support services and there is a safeguarding team to protect vulnerable adults. We also work with residents in their own communities to support local activities, encourage use of local facilities, including libraries, sports facilities and community centres and work with residents to tackle health inequalities.

How many people do we support with social care services?

In the last financial year 2009/2010, we visited over 2,400 new people to carry out an assessment of their social care needs. We provided services to 1,200 of these people and over 88% of the services were all operating within a month.

We also reviewed or reassessed the care that we had arranged for over 12,000 people across the city.

  • Over 9,000 adults received services that we had arranged during the year
  • 8,135 adults received community support, to help them stay independent, of which 5,461 were older people aged 65+
  • 2,655 households were in receipt of home care on a weekly basis
  • 2,395 carers were provided with additional help
  • 28,748 items of equipment were delivered to people to help them, of which 94% were delivered within seven working days

How many people use leisure and cultural facilities?

  • There were almost 1.25 million visits to libraries during 2009/2010
  • There were over 215,000 visits to Salford's museums during the year, despite Ordsall Hall being closed for refurbishment
  • There were almost 820,000 visits to a Fit City centre
  • Over 850,000 people visit the Lowry on average each year

Library membership in Eccles, Broadwalk and Walkden libraries has increased.

We also provide support to communities through neighbourhood management teams and community committees.
