Ian Stewart, City Mayor of Salford

This is the city I love. I grew up here and have spent a lifetime working for the people of Salford as both a trade unionist and a Labour politician.
I want to see Salford grow and develop, with jobs and opportunity for our young people, decent public services and help for the most vulnerable in our community.
But we face savage public spending cuts from the coalition government which is making ordinary people pay the price for a recession they did not create. Salford is facing tough times with millions of pounds being cut from the public services which local people rely on. It is heart-breaking.
In these times of austerity, my pledge to you is that I will always put the interests of local people first. I will do my utmost to protect the most vulnerable and to make sure that those with the broadest shoulders bear the heaviest burden.
Despite the impact of the cuts, we have a lot to be proud of. The spirit of Salford is still strong - I see that every day as City Mayor. Our people are our greatest strength.
There is much we can all do to make Salford a better place for local people and their families. This is our city - together we can make it better for all our people.
