The first funding round for 2011 will be open on 9 May 2011 and will close on 17 June 2011. The second funding round for this year will open on 5 December 2011 and close on 20 January 2012.
What we do
Working with communities across the city, the team encourages local people, groups and businesses to work more effectively together to tackle environmental problems within their neighbourhoods and green spaces.
To ensure real improvements are achieved and maintained across the city, community support and education initiatives require a joined up approach, incorporating different teams within the council. The Environmental Education Team works in partnership with many departments ensuring that comprehensive work is achieved. Some of the community projects are:
- Environmental crime
- Waste minimisation and recycling
- Behavioural change
- Climate change (with partners)
- Energy use and conservation (with partners)
Environmental crime
The Environmental Education Team operates within communities to help reduce environmental crimes such as dog fouling, fly tipping, graffiti, and litter. They can assist with litter picks and clean up projects to help develop a sense of pride within the community, encouraging individuals to take responsibility for their actions and set a leading example to younger generations.
Environmental Education Team can loan the following equipment to help get you started:
- Litter pickers
- Hi-visibility vests
- Gloves
- Bin bags
- Brushes

Waste minimisation and recycling
The Environmental Education Officers can work with communities to make them aware of how they can reduce, reuse and then recycle their waste. This can be by educating residents on how to store food correctly and thus throwing less away, or by setting up a clothes exchange to reuse clothes which would have previously been thrown away.
Salford City Council has recently introduced a new improved recycling collection service to help communities recycle more waste. Recycling helps reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and conserves raw materials required for new products. Environmental Education Officers are happy to provide communities with advice regarding Salford’s recycling facilities, how recycle large bulky items and other ways of reducing household waste.
Behavioural change
The Environmental Education Team provides numerous sessions designed to raise awareness and understanding of the wider aspects of looking after the environment and the need for a sustainable future. The sessions deal with how changing our daily behaviour can have a greater impact not only for ourselves but others in the world.
