Transport Innovation Fund referendum results

Greater Manchester Future Transport

Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) referendum has returned a no vote, the the turnout for Salford was 164,982 (57%).

A message from John Merry, Leader of Salford City Council - 12 December 2008.

"The majority have spoken and I respect their opinion. That’s democracy.

"A ‘no’ vote means that we still have an inadequate transport system and gridlock. There is no plan B. Traffic and congestion in and around Manchester will only get worse.

I understand people’s concerns and it may be that the ‘no’ vote has been swelled by the recession and current money worries, but I hope that in three to four years time people don’t regret not having voted yes.

Things can’t stay as they are. We have to sit down now and try and work out a way of getting money for vital investment in transport.”
