Core Strategy Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report
The city council is currently in the process of preparing a Core Strategy Development Plan Document (DPD). Under Section 19(5) of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act, the Core Strategy must be subject to a Sustainability Appraisal (SA) throughout its production, ensuring that it is fully consistent with and helps to implement the principles of sustainable development. Furthermore, in accordance with the requirements of the European Directive 2001/42/EC the SA will incorporate a Strategic Environmental Assessment.
The SA Scoping report represents the first stage in the SA/SEA process, its purpose being to:
- Identify the relevant plans, policies, programmes and initiatives that need to inform the Sustainability Appraisal process and the Core Strategy DPD;
- Identify the relevant baseline information;
- Identify key sustainability issues and problems; and
- Identify an appraisal framework, consisting of sustainability objectives and indicators, against which the Core Strategy and alternative options can be assessed.
The SA Scoping Report was published for public consultation for a five week period between 27 July and 31 August 2007. The consultation period for the SA scoping report has now closed.
