Leader of the Council

The Leader of the city council is currently Councillor John Merry and he is the most senior elected member in the council. The Leader provides vision, direction and drive for the city and directs the strategic policy and budget aims of the council.
Following the Leader’s appointment at the annual general meeting, the Leader allocates roles and responsibilities to the Lead Members of cabinet.
The Leader is responsible for producing the cabinet work plan, which sets out the council’s priorities for the year. He chairs meetings of the cabinet, which is responsible for the key decisions that affect the whole of the city based upon the cabinet work plan.
