Salford's Children & Young People's Plan

All local authorities are required to publish a children and young people’s plan

Salford's plan pulls together into a single document everything that the city wants for its children and young people, what action the city council and its partners are going to take in the future, and what they are trying to achieve by taking those actions.

It sets out where we are now, where we want to go and how we are going to get there.

Everyone involved wants this plan to be not just about children and young people, but also for them – a document that they can read and understand, and that tells them what they can expect.

About the plan

This is the first time we have tried to explain in one single document what our priorities are for all children and young people across the city. We have done this by measuring how we are doing across the five key areas

  1. be healthy
  2. stay safe
  3. enjoy and achieve
  4. make a positive contribution
  5. achieve economic well-being

We have identified the overall citywide priorities for these five areas. There was widespread agreement on these as well as determination to do the work required to achieve them.

Ten consultation events which took place during Winter 2005/06 included children and young people, parents and carers, elected members and representatives from the partners working with children and young people, and people who live and work in the four different localities have agreed how the city-wide priorities can be achieved locally.

This plan provides us all with direction in our day-to-day work with children, young people and their families or carers. We need to use it to guide us in working out how we make the plan happen in our own organisation, service, setting, school or locality.

The plan does not describe in detail, however, the range of action that will be taken or the specific role of the valuable contributions you all make. This detail will be described in other plans, which will outline interventions in communities for specific age groups and specific groups of children and young people.
