Joint Area Review

A Joint Area Review (JAR) is a new approach to inspection, reflecting the national agenda of brining together Education, Social Care Services for Children and all other public sector and voluntary/community provision. It replaces a number of previous inspection programmes.

OfSTED and the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) will conduct the Inspection into all children’s services provided by a range of public organisation and agencies.

Every local authority will have a Joint Area Review (JAR) once every three years. A Joint Area Review will use information from the Annual Performance Assessment (APA); this is a self-assessment that Local Authorities will be required to complete every year.

The JAR report is based on a self assessment, a review of Salford documentation and a two week visit to Salford including speaking to children, parents/carers and staff. It demonstrates joint working and includes our evidence of this performance.

Salford is in the first groups of authorities to have a review, and the on-site Inspection took place in January 2006.

How is the JAR linked to the Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA)?

The JAR will produce the score the Children and Young People CPA theme. The Corporate Assessment (CA) forms a major part of the overall Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) process
