AUDIO

“Euan McColl’s sang that Salford was a ‘dirty old town’ and some people still think of our city in that way …but Salford  is much cleaner and greener than they think.

‘‘I’m Dave Robinson. I work for the council’s Environment Directorate and I’m responsible for the city’s services of refuse collection, recycling, waste management, and street cleaning. I’ve lived in Salford all my life and I’ve worked for the city council for 25 years’’

‘‘I know our city has had image problems in the past, but Salford has improved for the better. We’ve made this film to tell you about how Salford’s environment has improved, and to encourage you to help us make our city even better.”

“Contrary to what some people think, Salford is a clean and green city. Official measures show that our streets are very clean, with levels of litter and dirt lower than those of many similar sized cities. We also have large amounts of parkland and open spaces compared to other cities. These open spaces are maintained to very high standards and two of our flagship parks hold prestigious national awards. They are truly inviting places for Salfordians of all ages to spend their leisure time.”

“The city council’s Environment Directorate has worked hard to achieve these improvements. Our work varies from planting bulbs and mowing lawns to organising bin collections; from cleaning the streets to running a yearly open day to encourage environmental awareness in Salford’’

‘‘We employ and train dedicated staff to maintain over 500 hectares of open spaces across more than 260 sites, and to clean the city’s streets by litter picking and operating mini-sweepers. We also collect waste from over 100,000 households each week and we offer recycling services across the city.”

“With your help we can make our city even better. For Salford to be a sustainable city we need to recycle more of our waste and reduce the amount that goes to landfill. You can help by recycling your household waste, including aluminium cans, cardboard, clothing, glass, garden waste and plastics   – details of how to order a recycling box will appear at the end of this film’’

‘‘We also need to continue to work to make the streets cleaner. Help us by disposing of rubbish sensibly and using litter and recycling bins. Think about how best to dispose of things like cigarette ends and chewing gum, and also clean up after your dog.”
