Disability Access Strategy
Salford City Council is committed to creating an inclusive community, which is based on equality and inclusion. As a member of Partners IN Salford, the Council is a signatory to the Community Plan, which establishes the aim 'to improve the quality of life of all of our citizens'.
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 has given a statutory framework and set minimum standards that must be achieved with regard to disabled people. As a service provider we are subject to new duties (implemented in 1999 and further in 2004) to remove barriers to disabled people by taking reasonable steps to make changes to policy, practice and procedures by providing auxiliary services or aids and to alter physical features of the built environment.
It is essential the city council has a positive image and is seen promoting initiatives, which create improvements for disabled people who live, work, and visit our community. Although much has already been achieved it is important the local people along with visitors are made aware of what has been achieved and what the strategy is for the future.
