What the council does
The council is concerned with putting equal opportunities into action and coordinating a corporate approach to equality and diversity.
The council is specifically looking at the following areas and a brief overview of each is appended below:
- Employment
- Service delivery
- Monitoring
- Council-wide issues
- Policy development
- Training
- Help with making the council an accessible place
Employment
A major function of the council is employment and the council acknowledges the important part this function plays within the community. The council is working towards developing a diverse workforce that reflects the population of Salford in terms of race, disability, gender, sexuality, religion and age etc.
Service delivery
The council acknowledges the needs of Salford's diverse communities and strives to provide them with the best service possible. To help the council in this aim, the council is implementing the Equality Standard for Local Government and ensuring that the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 is implemented effectively.
Monitoring
Every year each council directorate has to produce an Equality Action Plan to show what action they've taken over the previous year on equality issues. It also shows what targets they've set themselves for the next year. The council monitors these plans and works with directorates to help them meet their targets. The council also monitors how it is performing against its corporate targets and publishes the results of this monitoring in its annual report.
Council-wide issues
The council ensures that information and support is availiable on the implications of issues that affect the whole council in terms of equal opportunities; for example, the council's policies on recruitment and selection; complaints; harassment and job sharing.
Policy development
The council develops policies, procedures and guidelines covering all aspects of equalities on a corporate level for both employees and service users. This includes the regular monitoring and reviewing of policies for their effectiveness.
Training
The council provides specific training on current equality and diversity issues to directorates which is led by the corporate equalities agenda. The council can also assist directorates in arranging outside trainers to undertake more general equalities training within directorates.
Help with making the council an accessible place
The council has collated guidelines on producing information in accessible formats to assist people with disabilities or who may not speak English as their first language. The council also coordinates the transformation of its buildings into physically accessible places for people with disabilities.
