Deputy Leader of the Council

The Deputy Leader of the city council is Councillor David Lancaster.
The deputy leader works closely with the leader of the council, deputising on issues when necessary and as agreed with the leader. He is responsible for liaising with other members of the cabinet, particularly where matters within this portfolio affect other aspects of council business or have a city-wide impact.
The deputy leader is responsible for ensuring appropriate consultation with partners and the community on matters within this portfolio.
In addition the deputy leader will chair meetings of the cabinet in the absence of the leader and act jointly with the leader in connection with certain lead member decisions relating to the portfolios for both the leader and the deputy leader (see 'Scheme of Delegation').
The deputy leader also exercises certain responsibilities in conjunction with designated cabinet members and, working with the leader, provides political leadership.
Cllr Lancaster holds special cross-cutting portfolios for crime and disorder; electoral matters; targets and pledges; property; customer focus; and waste disposal.
