Leader of the Council

The Leader of the Council is the head of the council's Cabinet. The Leader is Councillor John Merry.
The Leader has a role in all the council's affairs, although in practice certain areas of operation are assigned to the deputy leader and designated cabinet members.
The leader retains individual responsibility for key policy initiatives, and areas of work such as the statutory Community Strategy (the Community Plan) and the work of the Local Strategic Partnership, Partners IN Salford. He chairs cabinet meetings, exercises some responsibilities in conjunction with the deputy leader and designated cabinet members and provides political leadership.
Councillor Merry also holds portfolios for the follow cross-cutting issues: communications and marketing; strategic overview; regeneration matters; policy; and performance and best value.
