Madam Mayor's Diary
Monday 1 September
Myself and the Mayoress attended the swearing in of the new Chief Constable of Greater Manchester, Mr. Peter Fahey. We wish him success in his new role.
With the new Chief Constable I presented awards to serving police officers for their long service and bravery. As a community we owe the police and other front line services a debt of gratitude for their selfless service which enables us all to lead safer lives in the communities we live in.
Wednesday 3 September
The Mayoress and I attended the service for Merchant Navy Day to remember those who had lost their lives whilst serving their country. Along with Mr. Sidebottom I laid a wreath at the Plaque on Salford Quays commemorating their memory. Once again we owe these selfless men a debt of gratitude.
In the evening the Mayoress and I attended an award ceremony held at Salford Art Gallery to thank those organisations in Salford who work in the voluntary sector. Increasingly they are providing services along side our own professional staff and this ceremony recognised Good practice in Volunteer Management.
Congratulations to all who received an award and thank you for your hard work.
Friday 5 September
I attended a charity night held at the Brown Cow to raise money for my charities. Paul Ashton and his friends arranged a brilliant night of Blues and Jazz and everyone enjoyed themselves. The singing was performed by Malcolm McBride and he really made sure we all enjoyed the night.
Saturday 6 September
We attended a very wet Garden Party on the Civic lawns. There were a number of displays including the police dogs and falconry. It was an opportunity for Salford people to get to know what the council does, to ask questions of the leaders and to meet with their M.Ps. There was a barbecue and various activities for young people. Again every one enjoyed themselves. I was able to judge the finals of the local dog show and it was very hard to pick a winner.
Sunday 7 September
Along with the Lord Lieutenant Mr. W Smith and other Mayors I attended St Paul’s Church in Kersal Moor, Salford, to commemorate the 92nd Anniversary of the opening of Broughton house, Home for Ex-Servicemen and women.
It was a very moving service but it also reminded us that our young men and women are still suffering terrible mental and physical injury in the service of their country. After the service we visited Broughton House. The Mayoress and I are going for a longer visit later in October.
Monday 8 September
I attended a Mayoral Briefing then chaired the Council Agenda Setting meeting prior to Council.
Wednesday 10 September
With the Mayors and Mayoresses of Greater Manchester I attended the Civic tour of Bolton hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton. We visited various sites of local interest.
Thursday 11 September
I chaired a meeting of my Charity Committee in the Mayor’s Parlour.
In the evening assisted by volunteers and by kind permission of Mr. John Wilkinson, Chairman of Salford City Reds, I held a bucket collection at the Reds ground. Thank you to all those who contributed.
Friday 12 September
I was shadowed by a reporter from the Advertiser to show what a day in the life of the Mayor was like.
We attended the Little Hulton Children’s Day Centre opening. What a tremendous facility this is for the children and parents from Little Hulton. It was really good to see so many supportive parents attending the opening and the support from the community was also really impressive. Local councillors, the local M.P and Jamie Moore the boxer were there to lend their support as well. It was a really enjoyable event. Thanks to all the exhibitors and to the staff for the wonderful work they do.
The next event we attended was a bowling match to close the season at Ordsall Park. We received a very warm welcome from Mr. John Ennis the chairman and his committee and enjoyed the game (I am not sure I won fairly although it was recorded that I did). Both the Mayoress and I had a lovely afternoon. (At this point the reporter from the Advertiser was flagging a bit and he had another job to go to). I was really pleased at the way he reported the day, it did reflect the respect and affection the people of Salford have for the Mayoralty.
In the evening we attended a Civic Dinner and Dance held at Tameside Town hall along with the Mayors and Mayoresses from Greater Manchester and other civic guests.
Saturday 13 September
We attended the Eccles Festival at the invitation of the chairman Mr. Jim Raynor. Once again we saw how much work volunteers do for the well being of their community. There were a variety of things to do and different stalls to visit. Once again thanks to Jim and his committee for their hard work on the festival it was a really enjoyable day.
In the evening the Mayoress and I attended the first ever Proms in the Park held at Buile Hill Park. There were some eight thousand people there and we listened to a tremendous performance from the Philharmonic and Russell Watson and other performers. It was a tremendous success and the evening closed to a brilliant firework display.
Sunday 14 September
We attended Boothstown’s Community Centre to present prizes to winners of the Worsley woods and Loopline race. Congratulations to all who took part. Again thanks to the organisers who give their free time to help build events that bring the community together.
