Madam Mayor's Diary
Monday 18 February
I opened a new multi use games area on Peel Estate, Little Hulton. I am sure it will be well used by the young people on the estate.
Tuesday 19 February
My Consort and I paid a visit to staff at Turnpike House to sell my grand raffle tickets. I am pleased to say they are selling well. In the afternoon we attended a citizenship ceremony at the Civic Centre. On this occasion 28 people from other countries were sworn in as British citizens, congratulations to them all.
Wednesday 20 February
I chaired the council budget meeting when the budget for the next financial year was set.
Thursday 21 February
My Mayoress and I were invited to attend the 70th Anniversary celebrations of the WRVS held at Salford Royal Hospital (Hope). It was a pleasure to meet some of the volunteers and staff who run the WRVS. I was asked to make a speech and cut the cake. Two awards were made to ladies who had volunteered for over 15 years and I was surprised to hear most of the people in the room had been with the WRVS for longer than 10 years. Well done to all of them.
In the evening we attended the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester’s Cadet Poppy Appeal Competition presentation ceremony at Manchester Town Hall. I was shocked to hear that the cadets had collected over £75,000.00 and was pleased to see our young cadets from Salford and Eccles receive awards from the Lord Lieutenant. Well done to everyone for this great effort.
Friday 22 February
My Consort and I attended a Learning Award Ceremony organised by the YMCA Training Salford held at Swinton Masonic Hall. I presented awards to over 50 young people and congratulated them on their achievements.
In the evening we attended the Mayor of Oldham’s Civic Ball at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Oldham. We had a most enjoyable night.
Sunday 24 February
My Consort and I attended the Mayor of Trafford’s Civic Sunday at South Manchester Synagogue, Bowdon. I was pleased to see some of the other Greater Manchester Mayors there. Although the service was short it was interesting to attend a service in the synagogue.
Monday 25 February
I attended St. Georges RC. High School, Walkden for the Year 8 assembly and to receive a donation for my charity appeal. The students in year 8 did a sponsored walk on a cold and windy day in January. I was amazed to learn that they had raised a grand total of £1,120.00 for my charities. Thank you so much year 8. Well done.
Tuesday 26 February
My Consort and I were invited to visit Bridgewater Primary School, Little Hulton, to take part in a World War 2 themed event. The children had been learning about the young evacuees in the war. They all had a gas mask in a box that they had made and also an identity card. When I arrived I was asked if I had my identity card, as it happened I had taken my fathers pay book and they accepted that otherwise I would have been put in jail. It was great fun and I had an opportunity to talk about my memories of the war with the children.
In the evening we attended the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Presentation Evening at the Willows Variety Centre, Salford. I had the pleasure in presenting certificates to over 50 young people who had participated, accessed and passed their bronze, silver and gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. Congratulations to all who took part.
Thursday 28 February
My Mayoress and I met the Duke of Edinburgh at Salford University on a visit to the acoustic laboratories in the Newton Buildings. The Duke was very interested in the purpose of the different rooms and I was very grateful to the students who explained about the rooms and demonstrations they carried out. The visit went well and all too soon the Duke was off to meet the Queen in Manchester.
In the evening I hosted a meeting of the Town Twinning Committee at the Civic Centre. The 4 twin towns were represented and we had two visitors from St. Ouen and the painters who had taken part in an artists exchange to St. Ouen before Christmas. After the meeting I invited the committee and visitors into the Mayor’s Parlour for a more informal chat and an opportunity for our visitors to meet the members of the other twinning groups.
Saturday 1 March
My Consort and I attended a Bangladesh Medical Society Language day held at the United Reform Church, Swinton. The day is held as a celebration to Bangladesh receiving the right to speak their own language and to remember the 4 students who lost their lives fighting for that right.
In the evening we were invited to a fundraising dinner in aid of the Children’s Charity Imibala at Lancashire County Cricket Club, Trafford. The dinner was hosted by All Hallows Business and Enterprise College with the Arcadia Group, who have sponsored the charity since 2002. On this occasion they were raising funds for a minibus for the children at the Somerset West Methodist Primary school in Cape Town, Africa. They raised over £3,000.00 on the night - well done!! The minibus will soon be purchased and sent to the school in Cape Town.
Sunday 2 March
My Consort and I attended a Charity Concert by Cadishead Community Band at Irlam Catholic Club, Cadishead in aid of my charity appeal. A good night was had by all and £200.00 was raised. Thanks to all who took part and the organisers.
