Madam Mayor's Diary
Monday 2nd July
My Consort and I met with the
Director of City Light Trust in the Mayor’s Parlour to discuss the agenda for the prayer meeting to
be held in the Council Chamber on 11th July.
At 12 o’clock we welcomed an exchange group from Lünen one of our twin towns. The young people arrived with adults for a 2 week stay in Salford. I hope they have enjoyed their time here and didn’t let the rain put them off having a good time. I look forward to seeing them again later this week before they go home.
In the evening we enjoyed a dinner hosted by Salford with Swinton Rotary Club at Swinton Park Golf Club. I thanked them for all the voluntary work they do in the city and for the invitation and warm reception we received.
Tuesday 3rd July
We attended the Annual General
Meeting of Court at the Old Fire Station, University of Salford where proposals to revise the institutional
charter and statutes were discussed and voted on.
Wednesday 4th July
On a very wet morning I was
invited to open a new Dementia Unit at Pendleton Court Care Centre. I was very impressed with the unit
and I am sure the residents will be very happy there.
At 3-30pm my Consort and I attended the North West in Bloom Judging Day held at Langworthy Cornerstone, fortunately we did not have to walk round in the pouring rain with the judges. I hope the bad weather did not deter the judges and they give Seedley and Langworthy good marks for their excellent gardens and floral displays.
In the evening I held my first meeting of my charity committee, who came up with some good ideas for fundraising.
Thursday 5th July
My Mayoress and I attended
an inaugural lecture by Professor Tony Long at the Mary Seacole Lecture Theatre, University of Salford
- the title ‘Never work with children and animals!’ It addressed the difficulties and rewards of undertaking
research with young people. It was very entertaining with interaction with the audience.
In the evening we were invited, by the Salford Borough Commander of Eccles Fire Station to a community concert performed by the Salford Youth Orchestra. What a great night we had, the young people played well and every one enjoyed the performance.
Friday 6th July
In the afternoon my Consort and
I went to the Lowry Outlet, Salford Quays to view 5 primary schools' art exhibitions. Two children from
year 4/5 had been chosen to create the paintings and the theme was children playing in Salford. All
the paintings were excellent and the children had worked very hard.
Saturday 7th July
We attended the Monton Village
Festival and spent a few hours looking at the stalls and judging the fancy dress competition.
Later that day I held a Reception at Salford Museum and Art Gallery for the Early Book Society who are holding their Biennial Conference at the University and I was pleased to give them a potted history of Salford. The delegates came from America, Japan and Europe as well as Britain. I wished them well with their conference and hoped they would find time to visit other parts of the city.
Sunday 8th July
We were invited to lunch with
the new High Sheriff of Greater Manchester and his wife, at Booths Park, Knutsford. It was an opportunity
to get to know the High Sheriff a little better and to meet up with the other Mayors of Greater Manchester.
Monday 9th July
My Consort and I attended Moorfield
Primary School, Irlam to present “Wonder Workers” certificates to the children who had worked hard the
previous week and after a tour of the school we answered questions from Year 6 pupils as part of Careers
Week. They asked some unusual questions as well as many very intelligent ones.
Later that day we were invited to a reception held at the Copthorne Hotel by a joint Home Office team who gave a presentation on the purpose of the Partnership Support Programme that will focus on the Crime and Disorder Partnership in Salford. The team will look at all aspects of the partnership and report their findings and any recommendations to Salford at a later date.
Tuesday 10th July
We attended Walkden High School
for their “Services to School and local Community Awards” celebrations. The school had chosen 12 young
Peoples Champions and I was very proud to present the certificates to them. We were also entertained
by some of the young people who took part in their production of Grease, it was very good and once again
I was very impressed with the talent of our school children - well done to all.
In the evening we were invited to the Beis Yaakov High School Graduation Ceremony where the head teacher, guest speaker and chair of governors congratulated the leavers and wished them well for the future.
Wednesday 11th July
My Consort and I attended
the launch of Salford Community Fund alongside the Chief Executive, Barbara Spicer. The fund comes from
a number of trust funds that have been in existence for some time but have been dormant for years. The
community foundation of Greater Manchester will operate the fund for Salford and local groups can apply
for grants up to £1,500.00. I am sure there will be many requests for the grants and they should benefit
many voluntary groups in Salford.
In the evening we hosted a Prayer Event organised by City Light Trust and Salford Prayer Network in the Council Chamber as part of the week of prayer for Salford. We prayed for people in authority, education, media and the church’s mission.
Afterwards we went to the Fletcher Hall where the visitors from Lünen enjoyed a disco and hot pot supper. I wished them a safe journey home for Friday and hoped they had enjoyed their stay in Salford, despite the weather.
Thursday 12th July
The Mayoress and I officially
opened the Naseeb Indian Restaurant on Chorley Road, Swinton. We had a most enjoyable night and I wish
them well with their business.
Friday 13th July
My Consort and I together with
the Mayors of Greater Manchester, M.P.s, Councillors and many residents attended the funeral of the
Mayoress of Wigan at Leigh Parish Church.
In the evening we attended a production of “Daisy Pulls It Off” at the Robert Powell Theatre, Salford University, performed by members of Urban Stage Theatre School. We enjoyed it very much.
Saturday 14th July
We were invited to the Bright
Road Youth and Community Centre where an After School Performing and Arts Club is run for the youngsters
in Eccles. I was asked to open an art exhibition, which included a short drama presentation and judge
the artwork on display. I was very impressed with the art work and drama the children had produced.
It was difficult choosing 3 winners because all the work was so good. Good luck to the centre in the
future.
In the evening we went to St. Peter’s Church, Swinton to a fundraising concert by the Fusiliers Band (Lancashire) and the Corps of Drums. The concert was well attended and a good night was had by all. The money raised will go towards the church restoration fund.
Sunday 15th July
The Swinton Open Space Community
Day was cancelled because of the bad weather. I hope it is better for them next year.
Monday 16th July
I hosted a Dinner for Mr. John
Wilkinson O.B.E. and his family in the Mayor’s Parlour to celebrate his 25 years as Chairman of Salford
City Reds Rugby League Club. We had a very pleasant evening.
Tuesday 17th July
My Consort and I attended two
University of Salford Graduation Ceremonies at The Lowry, Salford Quays.
In the evening we went along to the Monton House Hotel, Eccles to attend Westwood Park Primary School Presentation Evening where I presented the certificates and prizes to the year 6 pupils who were leaving the school to go to High schools in September.
Wednesday 18th July
I attended a photocall with
students from Walkden and Swinton High schools before chairing the Council meeting. At the meeting the
students asked 4 questions of Members of the Cabinet and at 12.30pm I presented the Mayor’s Citizen
Award to Mr Ken Crook who is involved in many voluntary activities, including teaching children Kerb
Kraft. Ken, his family and Lee Craven who nominated Ken, joined me later in the Mayor’s Parlour for
a buffet lunch.
At 2.00pm the Mayoress and I made our way to London to attend the Queen’s Garden Party which was held on Thursday 19th July. In the evening we were invited to have dinner with Barbara Keeley MP in the House of Commons.
Thursday 19th July
We had a lovely time at the
garden party. We had a good view of the Queen and her party and wandered around the grounds of the Palace.
It was an experience the Mayoress and I will never forget arriving back home at 12.30 a.m. tired but
very happy.
Friday 20th July
My Consort and I welcomed the
Coalfield Communities and Alliance Conference held in the Council Chamber.
Later we attended St. John’s C.E. Primary School to present Year 6 with certificates and to wish them well in their High schools. I also presented flowers to the Deputy Head and one of the teachers who are also leaving to go to schools in Bolton and Oldham. I thanked them for all the years they had given to Salford Education and wished them well for the future.
Following this I officially opened the Beechfield Community Centre that had been refurbished by a partnership of Bramall Construction and Salford Construction using unemployed Salford residents who I am pleased to say have all gained employment via Bramall Construction and other partners. Well done to everyone concerned with the project, especially the residents association.
In the evening we went to Buille Hill Banqueting Suite to attend the Citywide Staff Awards Evening. Well done to all who received nominations and awards - a great night was had by all.
Saturday 21st July
My Consort and I went to Cleavely
Athletics Track to open the Relay for Life fundraising event. The event allows the fundraisers to honour
cancer survivors and those whose lives have been lost and to raise life saving funds to help Cancer
Research. This is the 2nd time the event has taken place in Salford and I hope it will continue in the
future.
Sunday 22nd July
Our first engagement was at
the Nicky Alliance Day Centre for their A.G.M. I extended greetings from the City Council and wished
them all the best for the future.
Our next engagement was at the Sacred Trinity Church, Chapel Street, to attend a Commemoration Service for Humphrey Booth.
We then went on to Salford Watersports Centre on the Quays, where the charity Dragon Boat Race was taking place. We were introduced to many charity organisations who were there to raise money. I later presented the prizes to the winning teams.
Monday 23rd July
I welcomed a group of scouts
from our twin town of Lünen together with members of the Salford/Lünen Twinning Committee. They arrived
on Friday 20th July for 6 days on an exchange visit.
At 1-30pm my Consort and I attended the Speech Day at King David Junior School.
In the evening we were invited to an evening of old tyme music by the Edgefold Players at Worsley Court House as part of the Worsley Festival. Thanks to the Worsley Event Group we had a most enjoyable night.
Tuesday 24th July
My Consort and I sat on the
Heart of Salford Awards Judging Panel held in the Mayor’s Parlour. What a difficult task. I wanted to
give all the nominees a prize.
Wednesday 25th July
The A.G.M. of the Manchester
South Valuation Tribunal was held at Worsley Court House. As both my Consort and I are on the Valuation
Tribunal, I was happy to welcome the President and delegates from Greater Manchester to Salford.
In the afternoon I welcomed the international judges to Langworthy and Seedley In Bloom Judging Day and prize giving event held at Langworthy Cornerstone, Salford. The organisers will have to wait for a while to see if they have won. I am looking forward to a further visit, next week, to see the streets, alleyways and schools that took part in the competition.
Thursday 26th July
On a very wet evening my Consort
and I attended the Awards Evening for the Voice Group supported by New Deal for Communities in Charlestown
and Lower Kersal. What fun we had wallowing in the mud and rain but that did not deter the young people
who were celebrating a year of hard work. I congratulated the young people who had organised the event.
Friday 27th July
The sun is shining! We attended
the Duchy Community Street Festival organised by the Duchy Youth Project where I presented the young
people with their awards. I was very impressed with the many activities that are held in the centre
for the children and young people and with the many volunteers who help to run the centre.
Later we made our way to Barton Brook Nursing and Residential Home in Eccles to open the new Dementia Care Unit “Moss House”. I met many of the staff and was most impressed with the standard of care given to the residents who seemed very happy living in the home.
In the evening we arrived at the Lowry Hotel for a pasta party hosted by Sir Rocco Forte to welcome all the athletes competing in the Salford BG Triathlon World Cup on Sunday.
Saturday 28th July
We attended the Manchester
Summer Mega Mela held in Platt Fields Park, Manchester. All of the Greater Manchester Mayors were present
and we had a very pleasant afternoon walking round the park meeting many of the residents who were enjoying
the event.
Sunday 29th July
Salford’s Big Event, the Triathlon
World Cup. What a day, the sun shone and hundreds of people lined the streets to cheer the athletes
on. The British competitors did well and I had the pleasure of presenting the women winners with their
medals and the men with their flowers. Congratulations to the winners and all who took part, it was
a great day.
In the evening we attended the final performance of "On Top of the World" with the Mayors of Tameside, Bolton and Wigan, held at the Lowry, Salford Quays. The performance was part of a programme of work undertaken and performed by under 18s involved in music making over the past year,organised by Greater Manchester Music Action Zone.
Tuesday 31st July
My Consort and I visited the
Seedley and Langworthy in Bloom area to look at the gardens and alleys that took part in the in Bloom
2007 competition. We also visited one of the upsidedown houses and were very impressed with the results
of the transformation and high standard of refurbishment of the properties.
In the evening we attended a fundraising event at St. Ann’s Hospice Day Care Centre. The event was organised by the cancer patient support and relaxation group. The group raise funds to offer trips, well-being days, flowers and general support for people living with cancer.
