Madam Mayor's Diary
Tuesday 1 July
The Mayoress and I attended a memorial service held at Manchester Town hall, a service to remember the thousands of men women and children who died of starvation in the Ukraine during the years of Stalin. The Lord Mayor of Manchester and Mayors and Mayoresses from surrounding areas attended.
Wednesday 2 July
We attended a tea dance held for senior members of the community in Swinton and Pendlebury. It was arranged by the Senior Action Group themselves to help older people stay fit and active. It was very well attended and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Thursday 3 July
We attended the Gemini group in Kersal to give a talk on the role of the Mayor and took part in a radio interview for Salford City Radio. All the ladies asked very interesting questions and I have invited the group into the Mayor’s Parlour to hear more about our civic history.
Friday 4 July
Along with the Lord Mayor of Manchester and the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester we attended the citizenship awards hosted by St Ann’s Hospice. Young people across Greater Manchester had raised funds and assisted patients in various ways. The majority of schools who entered were from Salford and they won many of the awards. The outstanding student who won the Citizen of the year attends Salford College. We are very proud of all their efforts.
In the evening the Mayoress and I attended an awards ceremony to present certificates to the police, youth service, the voluntary and community sector who work so hard to help the young people of Salford. Thank you all for your efforts.
Saturday 5 July
We attended Monton Festival - again everyone worked really hard to make this festival a success. The weather was really bad although there were some sunny periods. It’s really great to see communities coming together in this way.
In the afternoon we attended a Dance Showcase facilitated by Salford Community Leisure held at the Robert Powell Theatre. Again young people from across Salford put on a display of dance as a fun way to keep fit. The age group was from 8 – 18 years and both boys and girls took part. It was really professional and very enjoyable.
In the evening we attended St. Peter’s Church at Swinton to listen to a concert to help raise funds for the restoration of the church. The band of the Lancashire Fusiliers Association played as did the Northern Pipe Band. Congratulations to the organisers, it was a very successful night.
Sunday 6 July
We went to Blackpool to watch and support Salford City Reds rugby team in the Northern Rail final against Doncaster. Salford won 60-0 and it was a brilliant game. Congratulations to John Wilkinson and his team.
In the evening we attended the celebration of Salford Symphony Orchestra's 60th Anniversary held at Peel Hall. We have some really remarkable talent in the city and this orchestra is something we are very proud of. It was a brilliant performance again, congratulations to all concerned.
Monday 7 July
The Mayoress and I, together with the Lord Mayor of Manchester, attended the Cliff Manchester United Training ground where Sir Alex Ferguson launched the Football Teacher’s Research Pack. The Manchester United Foundation intends to help teachers across Manchester, Salford and Trafford to have better skills in teaching young people about football.
Tuesday 8 July
We hosted a visit by the President of the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester, Mrs. B. Goldstone and fellow council members in the Mayor’s Parlour.
The Mayoress and I opened Fielder Lodge in Winton which will provide support to young women who at this stage of their life will need some extra support.
In the evening we attended Broughton Jewish Cassel Fox primary school where we were entertained by the whole school performing ”The Wizard of Oz”.
Wednesday 9 July
We again attended the Cliff training ground where local PCSO and the police had arranged a mini football tournament for local schools. The children had a really enjoyable day and we congratulate the PCSOs for their hard work.
Following this we opened the refurbished Clifton Community Youth Centre. A group of young people working through the Princes Trust and the Fire service have made this centre a place young people in Clifton can enjoy.
In the afternoon we opened Tindall Street Allotment and Figures in the Orchard. Groups included disabled, cardiac rehabilitation, probation service and there are plans to have a war time garden and a sensory garden. Unfortunately it rained really hard so we will be gong back in August with, we hope, some sun to open the next phase of the allotment.
In the evening we were joined in the Chamber by the City Light Trust who had arranged an evening of prayer. It was a really enjoyable evening where we prayed for a number of people and aspirations for the city.
Thursday 10 July
In the morning the Mayoress and I hosted a visit from members of the school council from Wentworth High school who asked lots of questions about the role of the mayor and the civic history. They also visited the chamber and asked questions about how the council works.
In the afternoon we attended James Brindley Primary School in Walkden to present a young 8 year old girl who had looked after her unconscious mother and got help for her, with a Heart Start award. Also presenting her with an award were the Greater Manchester Ambulance Service.
Friday 11 July
Together with the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester the Mayoress and I opened a new primary School in Ordsall - Primrose Hill which is the first new primary school in ten years. Congratulations to the teachers and pupils who have a brilliant facility.
In the afternoon we attended Hemsley House to view a flower festival held by the Masons to raise money for various charities. The displays were really beautiful and a lot of thought and hard work has gone into them.
In the evening we attended the parish of St Paul’s Peel for a reception for the Bishop of Manchester, Bishop Nigel McCulloch. He brought the baton which was made for the Commonwealth games and the service was well attended by parishioners and we were impressed by the singing of children from St Paul’s Peel Primary School.
Saturday 12 July
In the company of the Mayors and Mayoresses from across Greater Manchester we attended the 20th Anniversary of the Youth games. This year the sponsors were the Greater Manchester PCTs and the Greater Manchester Police Authority. There were many entrants from Salford clubs and schools and a whole variety of events. Congratulations to all those who took part.
In the afternoon we attended a mini soccer event in Eccles hosted by the Salvation Army.
In the evening we attended Stockport Town Hall to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the opening of the town hall. We watched a brilliant performance by Stockport Symphony Orchestra.
Sunday 13 July
We were guests at Langdon College and Community Annual Awards ceremony. Students with a learning disability are helped to develop to their full potential and to live independently in the community within their own culture and religious beliefs. Congratulations to staff and students.
Tuesday 15 July
I chaired the morning session of Council. In the afternoon the Mayoress and I attended the Graduation Ceremony at the Lowry of successful students from Salford University. It was a privilege to be there when Ryan Giggs received his Honorary Degree.
Friday 18 July
The Mayoress and I presented awards to staff from Citywide. They provide an essential service across the council, from school cleaning to providing and serving food for our schools and the many departments of the council.
Saturday 19 July
The Mayoress and I attended Start in Salford’s Arts Festival at Brunswick House where we had a tour of the garden project alongside a tour of the building, gallery and art sessions. We enjoyed the occasion very much and wish everyone involved with this Arts Festival congratulations.
Sunday 20 July
We attended the Commemoration Service for Humphrey Booth. This gentleman left in trust money which was to be distributed for the benefit of the people of Salford.The Charity Board who administer this have distributed millions across the City since his death. Thank you to all of the committee for your hard work.
In the evening we were guests of the Norwegian Consul Peter Copeland on board HMS “STATSRAAD LEMKUHL” in the tall ships based at Liverpool.
Liverpool dock was packed with people and it was very enjoyable to look round the ship and also talk to so many Norwegians who now live in the North West.
Monday 21 July
The Mayoress and I along with the Lord Mayor of Manchester and the Deputy Mayor of Bury attended the 57th Annual meeting of the Nicky Alliance Day Centre. This successful group provides day services, meals on wheels and a home visiting service to the Jewish community. Congratulations and thank you for all your hard work.
Tuesday 22 July
We travelled down to London to attend the Queens Garden Party. It was really interesting to visit Buckingham palace and see the garden. The Queen had an escort of Beefeaters and we enjoyed tea and cake. As always Her Majesty looked beautifully groomed. Both the Mayoress and I had a very pleasant day.

I chaired a meeting of my charity committee.
Wednesday 30 July
Along with my fellow councilors, I attended the funeral of Marion Wordsworth who had served Little Hulton as a councillor prior to retiring due to ill health.
Thursday 31 July
The Mayoress and I welcomed, in the Mayor’s Parlour, some of the mothers from Bnos Jewish Nursery. They learned something of our civic history and visited the council chamber.
