Madam Mayors Diary
Saturday 1st September
My consort and I attended the Broughton Festival in Albert Park. The weather was good and we met many residents who were enjoying a day out.
In the afternoon we made our way to the Council Chamber at Salford University to attend the 40th Anniversary of the Salford Astronomical Society where we were welcomed by the chairman of the society and heard a very interesting speech from the guest speaker Dr. Allan Chapman from Wadham College, Oxford.
Sunday 2nd September
Our first engagement was at Victoria Park. My consort and I enjoyed talking to the friends of Victoria Park who had organised the Friendship Day. It was well attended by the residents even though the weather was not too good. There were lots of stalls and a great steel band played and cheered every one up.
Our next engagement was at St Paul’s Church, Kersal, to attend the 91st anniversary service for Broughton House, Home for Ex-Service personnel organised by the trustees of the home. Following the service we went back to Broughton House for tea and had an opportunity to meet some of the residents.
In the evening we attended the licensing of the Rev.Ted Crofton at St James’ Church Hope by the Bishop of Bolton.
Monday 3rd September
I attended a short service at Salford Quays to commemorate Merchant Navy Day. I met some of the men who served in the Merchant Navy and was very interested in the many stories they told about their experiences during the 2nd world war. They were a lively lot even though most are in their 70s and 80s.
In the evening my Consort and I were invited to Salford City Reds Awards evening for the players. We had a good night and were pleased to see some of the players rewarded for their efforts, in spite of the fact that they had not had the best of seasons.
The chairman and players were very positive and felt sure they will be in the Super League again soon.
Wednesday 5th September
This must be one of the most rewarding engagements we have attended. My Consort and I took part in the Heart of Salford Award Ceremony at Salford Quays where residents in Salford received awards for all the time and effort they put in volunteering. My congratulations to all who volunteer in Salford and thank you for all you do for others.
Thursday 6th September
I attended two admin meetings at the Civic Centre. In the afternoon my Consort and I attended the unveiling of the sculpture “clasp” outside the Mary Seacole Building, University of Salford. Later we heard from the Chancellor about the courses in health and social care on offer at the university. We then heard from the sculpturess who built the sculpture, how she worked with the children from Albion High School on the design, and how she built the piece from scratch.
In the evening my Consort and I attended Salford Arts Theatre, Liverpool Street, to see a musical based on the regeneration in the Pendleton area of Salford. It was hard to believe the people in the community had written, produced and acted in the play it was so good. We had a very entertaining evening, well done to all who were involved.
Friday 7th September
We visited Seedley Primary School for the launch of Medequip4kids, a charity which raises money to buy specialist paediatric equipment for children in hospital.
In the evening my Consort and I attended the Mayor of Tameside’s Civic Dinner and Dance in the Town Hall, Ashton-under-Lyne. We enjoyed the evening and met up with the other Mayors of Greater Manchester.
Saturday 8th September
We attended Eccles festival in the morning where the residents were enjoying all the fun of the fair and many stalls selling goodies.
At lunchtime we left Eccles to go to Littleton Road to open the new Riverbank Park. I was very impressed with the facilities they have for the under 9s and the plans the committee have for the older children and the wild flower garden. The weather kept fine and we had a lovely 3 hours with the residents and committee
In the evening we attended a fund raising event for the restoration of St. Peter’s Church, Swinton. We had a great time with the congregation listening to a concert given by the Greater Manchester Police band who played some wonderful music.
Sunday 9th September
In the morning my Consort and I attended a welcoming service at Salford Central Church for the new church leader and manager. I welcomed them to the city of Salford and wished them a long and happy relationship with the residents of Ordsall.
In the afternoon we visited the Swinton Open Space Community Association Fun Day. I was very pleased to present the prizes to the winners of the various events which took place. We had a walk round and spoke to the stallholders who informed us that they had enjoyed the day and many people had attended.
Monday 10th September
I chaired the Council Agenda Setting group held in the Civic Centre. Following this I was interviewed by Gail Sullivan from BBC Radio Manchester, it was good fun talking about my role as Mayor of the City of Salford.
In the evening my Consort and I attended the Zionist Central Council A.G.M.
Tuesday 11th September
My Consort and I visited All Soul’s R.C. Primary School, Weaste. We were invited to observe their school council. It was very interesting to hear the young people discuss their priorities for the school for the next year and then put the proposals to the remainder of the pupils who had split themselves into sub groups to discuss the issues and come forward with 3 priorities for the year. The school council then reconvened and accepted the proposals. I am sure we could learn a thing or two from the youngsters.
Wednesday 12th September
We had an invitation to Lanes for Drains Road Show at their factory in Monton, Eccles, and the opening of their reline production facility. We saw a demonstration of the latest drain and pipe relining technology. It was most interesting. I am learning a great deal in my year of office.
At 12 noon I welcomed head teachers, governors and pupils from 10 Salford schools into the Mayor’s parlour to congratulate them on their outstanding Ofsted reports. I presented certificates to all the schools and said how proud I was to hear of their success. Well done to all.
In the evening my Consort and I welcomed international and national delegates to Salford, who were attending a conference at the university on “Education in a Changing Environment”.
Thursday 13th September
My Mayoress and I attended the Police Long Service and Good Conduct Awards Ceremony held at the Civic Centre. I offered my congratulations to all the recipients and thanked them for all they had done over and above the call of duty for the citizens of Salford.
Later we attended the Manchester Carers Centre 10th Anniversary and A.G.M. at Urbis Manchester. The Salford Carers Centre have close ties with Manchester and I was pleased to meet some of our staff and carers from Salford. Following the Urbis event we went on to the official launch of Salford Council’s partnership with the BBC Philharmonic at The Lowry, Salford Quays where we enjoyed the music and listened to the speeches.
Friday 14th September
Last year as Deputy Mayor I attended the Ordsall Park Vets Bowling Club and enjoyed the afternoon very much so I was pleased to accept their invitation to attend again this year. My Consort and I took part in a game of bowls and we had lots of help to ensure we won. Once again we had a great afternoon.
In the evening my Mayoress and I attended a reception for the Bishop of Manchester and a service led by the Bishop held at the church of the Holyrood in Swinton.
Saturday 15th September
My consort and I attended the Open Day at Eccles Fire Station. It was interesting to have a close up look at the fire engines and to learn more about the Fire and Rescue Service. Lots of people attended and we had a pleasant morning with the officers and crews.
The afternoon was spent outside the Civic Centre with the residents of Salford enjoying the garden party celebrating local democracy. All the people who I spoke to said what a good idea it was and that they had had a good time and picked up lots of information about Salford. I was also interviewed on Salford Radio.
Sunday 16th September
My Consort and I went to Eccles Parish Church to attend the Annual Battle of Britain Service where I read one of the lessons and a wreath of poppies was laid next to the Battle of Britain window. The service was also attended by the Air Cadets who looked splendid in their uniforms.
In the evening we enjoyed a performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory performed by the Urban Stage Theatre School at the Robert Powell Theatre, Salford University.
Tuesday 18th September
My Consort and I attended a Citizenship Ceremony in the Council Chamber. I welcomed 8 people from different countries who had chosen to become residents of Salford and citizens of the United Kingdom to the Civic Centre. I congratulated them and had a chat over a cup of tea in the Mayor’s Parlour.
In the evening we went to Swinton Park Golf Club to welcome the Greater Manchester County Scouts to Salford and attend their A.G.M.
Wednesday 19th September
I chaired a meeting of full Council. At lunch time my consort and I visited the Environment Day on the civic lawns. Although the weather was bad many people attended and the staff reported that they had had many good reports about the work undertaken by the Directorate.
Thursday 20th September
My Mayoress and I visited Wentworth High School, Eccles. We had an opportunity to talk to the staff and the young people who were very busy learning. I was most impressed with the many sporting activities at the school and the excellent work being done to encourage young people to keep active both in and out of school time.
At lunch time we welcomed pupils and teachers from five schools who took part in “Citizenship Day” organised by the Rotary club of Walkden, together with the president and chairman of Walkden Rotary. I thanked the young people for their hard work and commitment to engaging in all aspects of becoming good citizens of Salford and the Rotary for hosting the event at Salford University.
In the evening we attended a reception to launch the “Acts of Achievement 2007 for Black History Month” hosted by the Lord Mayor of Manchester at Manchester Town Hall.
Friday 21st September
My Consort and I attended a meeting of the Court at Salford University who looked at the proposals for the revision of the charter and statutes. I am pleased to say both were voted for and were accepted. Later that day we attended Americhem Europe Limited based at Cawdor Street, Eccles, to see them receive the Queen’s Award for Enterprise from the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. It is the highest business accolade that a UK based business can achieve. Well done to them.
Saturday 22nd September
We were invited to a celebration of “marriage” between the World Harvest Bible Church and the Kingdom Faith Manchester, held at The Sanctuary, Dallas Court, South Langworthy Road. It was a lovely service - I spoke a little about my life and work as Mayor of Salford and wished them all the best for the future and got to cut the “wedding” cake with the pastors from the two churches.
Sunday 23rd September
On Sunday we went along to Roe Green to present prizes to the winners of the Worsley Race and Fun Run. The race was over 4.5 miles and the fun run was a short walk for all the family. There was lots of fun and games for all the family on the green and a brass band was enjoyed by all.
Monday 24th September
My Consort and I attended the Unveiling of a Mural at Eccles Station. The unveiling was carried out by Christopher Eccleston. Many guests were invited including the students from Eccles College who, together with “ Freccles”, The Friends of Eccles Station designed the Mural. The idea of the Mural is to improve the look of the Station. It depicts many areas of Eccles and is well worth seeing.
In the evening we went to Ordsall Hall to welcome a girls Football Team from our twin town of Lünen. The team had been invited to Salford by Beechfield United, a football club from Swinton.
Tuesday 25th September
We attended Bridgwater School’s Annual Prize Giving Ceremony at Bridgwater Hall, Manchester. It was a most enjoyable evening and I was happy to see so many young people receive their awards.
Wednesday 26th September
My Consort and I visited Harrop Fold School. We had a look at the new school building and the Head Teacher Mr Edkins explained the layout and how he would like to see the school used in the future. We then went on a tour of the old school, after which we were served tea and delicious cakes made by the students. I was very impressed with the young people all hard at work in their classes, looking very smart in their uniforms.
Thursday 27th September
My Mayoress and I, alongside some of the Mayors of Greater Manchester, attended a reception to celebrate the 58th year of The People’s Republic of China, held in Manchester. We met the Consulate General and many other dignitaries from the Chinese Population in Manchester.
Friday 28th September
My Consort and I bid farewell to the Girls Football Team From Lünen. They said that they had had a great time in Salford and were looking forward to coming back again someday.
In the evening we went to St. Luke’s Church, Weaste to attend the launch of The Eric Chadwick Memorial Fund. We had a wonderful evening listening to The Halle Choir and 3 Organists who knew or were taught by Eric Chadwick. The Fund will help to finance concerts in the church and help with repairs to the church organ.
Saturday 29th September
The weather is fine as we set off to officially open the event to celebrate 100 years at Winton Park. The festivities attracted many residents. We enjoyed all the activities and had many photographs taken with the organisers who were dressed in Edwardian clothes and looked great.
In the evening we joined The Mayor of Oldham in The Queen Elizabeth Hall, Oldham, to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of India’s Independence. We were treated to some excellent dancing and a few words from the President and The Consul of India. The Mayor of Oldham gave a short speech and I congratulated them and gave greetings from Salford.
Sunday 30th September
My Consort and I went to St. George’s Day Centre, Cromwell Road, Salford, to launch The Young at Heart Week - a week of events to celebrate the International Day For Older People which begins on 1st October. Today’s event was an Intergenerational Fun Day with lots of exciting entertainment and interactive games for young and older people. A good time was had by all.
