Pledge 3: Encouraging learning, leisure and creativity in Salford

We will raise education and skill levels and further enhance cultural and leisure opportunities.

This will be achieved by

  • Raising the educational attainment of children, young people and adults in the city
  • Providing better quality schools and leisure facilities
  • Promoting independence for people through education, training and employment
  • Encouraging more people to participate in a range of sport, culture and learning activities
  • Promoting the city for major cultural, sporting and leisure events

Headline targets for 2007/2008

  1. 65% of pupils taking GCSE's in 2007 to achieve 5+ A*-C
  2. To increase the usage of Salford's museums and art galleries by a further 5% from 743 per 1,000 population to 780 per 1,000 population
  3. Increase Salford Community Leisure's Society membership by 10%
  4. Increase attendance at Fit City centres by 1.1%
  5. Establish a database of 80 sports events volunteers
  6. Raise the percentage of school leavers from Salford schools:
    • going into full time education to 70%
    • going into further learning post 16 to 86%
    • going into work based training to 17%
