Feedback from consultation

The scrutiny support team would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in our annual consultation exercise with members of the public, which has just finished.

The exercise is carried out to find out what issues people would like Overview and Scrutiny to investigate over the coming year.

To gather people’s views we developed a questionnaire which asked people to identify their top 3 issues from a list of 9 previously identified issues. Over 2,000 forms were distributed using various methods:

  • Questionnaires were widely distributed across Salford including council reception areas, community committees, community centres, libraries and the mobile information centre
  • The team approached people in person at a range of local shopping centres and supermarkets and at various events including coffee mornings and carers events
  • Electronic versions of the questionnaires were posted on the council’s website and intranet and on digi-tv

255 forms were received back. The issues were scored 3,2,1 as they came first second and third, the results were then added up and were as follows

  1. Perception of crime, 239 points
  2. Meeting the needs of an ageing population, 209 points
  3. Safety and accessibility of public transport, 181 points
  4. Helping people into work, 173 points
  5. Neighbourhood working and community involvement, 172 points
  6. Regeneration and promoting employment opportunities, 172 points
  7. Local leisure facilities and activities for all, 165 points
  8. Behaviour in schools and exclusions, 156 points
  9. Information and advice for young people, 67 points

Additionally a number of general comments were made which should help inform and shape the work programme for the coming year.

Scrutiny chairs will meet over the next month to consider the results of the consultation and agree on work to be carried out by Overview and Scrutiny. Details will be provided once the work programmes have been agreed, alternatively please contact Karen Dainty by ringing 0161 793 2513 or by emailing Karen.dainty@salford.gov.uk

This year we introduced a prize draw, offering the people who completed a form the opportunity to win shopping vouchers. The winner selected completely at random was a lady who completed a form in Sainsbury’s.
