Elections-2003
Salford electors’ cast their vote by post at this year’s elections held
on 1st May. For the first time, all Salford’s 158,000 eligible voters were able to fill in their ballot
papers in the comfort of their own home, and mail them back to the Civic Centre.
The actual number of votes cast was 64,425.
Final results published 00.56
On 1 May electors throughout the country took part in elections for
thousands of council seats across England and Scotland. There were also separate elections for the Scottish
Parliament and the Welsh Assembly. The poll was widely regarded as the most significant test of public
opinion between the last and next general election.
Salford electors were involved in the biggest-ever experiment in postal
voting to date, the city council joining with 58 other local authorities which offered some 6.5 million
electors new voting opportunities.
In Salford the election was conducted entirely by
post, with electors being invited to return their marked ballot paper to the city council between 14
April and 1 May.
