How the council's budget is funded

The council’s gross costs are partially offset by service income including fees and charges made for the provision of our services and government grants specific to services. These specific grants include a dedicated schools grant providing funding for schools under arrangements that were introduced in 2006/07. The net costs after taking account of service income is commonly known as the budget requirement. This requirement is funded from two main sources,

1) the Government via its revenue support grant and the redistribution of income collected from business rates and

2) council tax payers via the council tax charge levied by the council. The following table shows how much we will receive from each of these sources in 2008/09.

Revenue source Amount (millions pounds) Percentage
Council Tax
£88.1 million or 41.3%
Government - Revenue Support Grant £15.3 million or 7.2%
Government - Redistributed business rates £109.8 million or 51.5%

The table below gives details of the comparable figures for 2007/08 and 2008/09
