Salford City CollegeThe leisure learning courses have been established to provide individuals with a wide selection of personal learning and development courses that are available at convenient locations throughout Salford. Courses are usually £65 for 10 sessions.

Barbering

Please note this is not a qualification course, but will give you basic knowledge and understanding to progress onto a qualification course.

This course is for those interested in cutting and styling the hair of men/boys. You will learn how to give client consultations, cut hair, trim and shape facial hair, shampoo and condition hair and scalp.

Learners will require a hairdressing kit, approximately £50.00 for personal use. (This is in addition to the course fee), these can be purchased from the college once you have started the course.

Cards, Crafts and Calligraphy *NEW*

Learners will create unique hand crafted cards, develop new paper skills and craft ideas to construct beautiful boxes and books which will be a joy to give, as well as learn simple calligraphy techniques to embellish these creations.

Caring For Your Dog *NEW*

Learners will be introduced to basic dog care and nutrition, grooming, health checks, exercise and the correct way to interact with a dog. It will also include basic knowledge of laws and legislation in relation to keeping a dog. There will be a small element of basic dog training. This is a theory course only and therefore no dogs are allowed.

Creating Jewellery Using Wire and Beads

Develop your jewellery making skills using creative and interesting bead and wire techniques. This course is suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners. Learners will have the opportunity to make bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings and other items of jewellery. See SCC website for further details.

Beginners will need to purchase tools, beads and wire for the course – Approx. cost: £24.00. (Trainer to advise in detail once learner enrolled)

Creative Techniques in SLR Photography

The course concentrates more on creativity than technical detail and is for those that already have a good working knowledge of SLR cameras and the basics of photography. Learners will look at the various camera settings and what makes good composition, through to achieving depth of field, creating macro photos, flash photography and a wide range of other creative photographic techniques.

Please bring: Your own SLR camera. Basic computer skills essential; some knowledge of simple Photoshop techniques would be useful but not essential

Drawing and Painting

Learners will work through basic drawing techniques and develop their observational skills using pencil and charcoal. Learners will be introduced to colour mixing, pastels and watercolours.

Fish Keeping and Aquarium Maintenance *NEW*

In this introductory course, learners will be shown the basics of how to set up and maintain a fish tank, introduce fish to the tank and correct populations. Advice and guidance will be given on fish health, disease control, remedies and water quality etc. Learners will be able to discuss common problems and how to solve them.

Flower Arranging

Learners will study both contemporary and traditional styles in flower arranging and the techniques to enable them to make seasonal/celebration designs. Learners will develop confidence, new creative skills and techniques and produce their own creative flower arrangement. Suitable for beginners or the more experienced learner.

Please bring to the first session a selection of mixed flowers, foliage, oasis, scissors, and small container – guidance will be given on a weekly basis thereafter.

Introduction to Cake Decorating *NEW*

Learners will be introduced to basic tips, tricks and handy hints with quick and easy ways to decorate and enhance your cakes using piping, crimping and mini sugar paste decorations. You will make a variety of toppings and decorations for recipes such as chocolate brownies, victoria sandwich carrot cake and fruit cake.

Supplies/ingredients will be provided in the first week. Each week thereafter learners will need to bring ingredients, food containers, clean apron and towel. The trainer will advise accordingly.

Introduction to SLR Photography

Getting the most from your SLR camera. This course introduces learners to photographic techniques and practices. Topics such as composition, shutter speed, aperture and depth of field, landscape photography, using flash, people & portraits, night photography, and street photography may be covered. Traditional techniques and basic functions of the camera will be covered.

Photoshop for Beginners

Learners will explore the possibilities of using Photoshop’s range of tools to repair, change and manipulate existing photographs with the end result being an improvement on the original image.

Basic computer skills essential; no prior knowledge of Photoshop is required. Learners are encouraged to bring in photographs of their own to work with.

Sew Easy (Beginners Garment Making)

Learners will learn how to set up, use a sewing machine and to make a simple garment from a commercial pattern. You will also learn how to insert seams, pockets, zips, sleeves and hems. Advice will be given on choice of patterns, fabrics and sewing equipment needed.

Learners will need some previous sewing experience. You will learn how to use accessories/tools on your sewing machine to customise clothes. You will be introduced to simple pattern drafting, choosing and calculating fabric amounts, embellishments, basic tailoring and alterations techniques.

Soft Furnishings (Curtains, Cushions and Blinds)

This course is suitable for complete beginners or for the more experienced sewer. You will choose your own project ie Cushions, curtains, or blinds. Learn how to set up and use a sewing machine, practice various sewing machine stitches, how to work out fabric quantities, and prepare all the equipment you will need to make your desired items.

Traditional Techniques in SLR Photography

Progressing with your SLR camera. This course is for those learners who have previously attended the introductory course, or for those that already have a good working knowledge of SLR cameras and the basics of photography. The course will include producing a small portfolio of images from the various genres of photography including portraiture, landscapes, still life and abstract. It will also include some basic Photoshop editing and also look at how to research and be influenced by other photographers.

Yoga

This course will develop learners’ knowledge, understanding and techniques of yoga, and will improve mental and physical wellbeing. Learners will undertake gentle exercise, posture techniques in order to promote balance, flexibility and harmony with the body and mind. This course may aid learners to improve strength, muscle tone and posture.

Please bring Yoga mat/bottle of water and a blanket for relaxation and wear appropriate footwear and clothing
