A6 The Crescent and Chapel Street, Salford
What is happening on Chapel Street?
Chapel Street about to be transformed into a distinctive city high street.
The area, which connects Salford University with Manchester City Centre, will become a vibrant collection of shops, cafes and business premises, as well as providing new housing. The current traffic-choked highway will be transformed to a tree-lined boulevard, making it more pedestrian friendly and creating a safer and calmer environment for businesses and visitors.
The final scheme will generate around 11,000 jobs, 220,000 square metres of commercial space, 849 homes and 390 hotel rooms.
The stunning architecture in the area will be celebrated once again as unused buildings are brought back to life with new and exciting uses.
Pedestrian friendly streets and public transport improvements will make exploring and passing through the area easy and enjoyable. The Meadows, a staggering piece of green space in the heart of the city, will be brought to the fore and re-connected to surrounding areas. Chapel Street will directly contribute to Salford's vision of a beautiful, vibrant and prosperous city.
What is being done to the road?
To make this community work, traffic calming measures are being put in place and footpaths are being widened to create a distinctive city high street.
While the work is being carried out, the road will temporarily be narrowed to one lane each way. On completion of the work this will widen again to incorporate one traffic lane and one for busses and cycles in each direction.
Work will mostly be complete by Christmas with permanent traffic management being removed. There will be some works in January during weekends and non-peak travel times. Details sent out to the local community and businesses can be downloaded from the bottom of this page.
Who is involved in the development?
The Chapel Street development is being carried out by the English Cities Fund in partnership with Salford City Council. It is being funded by the Northwest Development Agency (£8.97 million) and European Regional Development Fund (£1.79 million).
When was this scheme approved?
The scheme was approved by Salford City Council in January 2010 following more than two years of consultation with the community and stakeholders.
