Community safety and crime reduction

Together we are cutting crime!
Crime prevention partners in Salford, including the police and Salford City Council, are working with communities to reduce crime.
Our efforts in the last year have led to substantial year on year reductions in crime. The latest crime figures show a reduction of 7.9% in recorded crime in the year between April 2008 and March 2009 compared to the same period in 2006/07. This means there were 2,283 fewer offences and victims of crime.
The biggest reductions have been in the areas of:
• Criminal damage and arson, with 962 fewer offences, a reduction of 14% on the 2007-8 total; and
• Vehicle crime where we achieved a 10.7% reduction with 551 fewer offences.
Other crimes that have been reduced include robbery, rape and less serious assaults.
Councillor David Lancaster, Salford City Council’s lead member for Community Safety said: “These figures are really encouraging for those working hard to fight crime and anti-social behaviour. Many communities have been involved in supporting our activities and operations, sending out a clear message that crime will not be tolerated in our city".
