About us

The Salford Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) are responsible for reducing the harm caused by drug and alcohol use in Salford. We focus on delivering the aims of the national drug strategy: "Drugs: Protecting Families and Communities".

The aims of this strategy are to:

  • CUT drug-related crime and anti-social behaviour
  • CUT harm caused to young people by substance misuse
  • CUT the number of families devastated by drug use
  • INCREASE the number of drug users making a positive contribution to society
  • EXPAND and improve the drug treatment services

We are also responsible for the local delivery of "Safe. Sensible. Social.", the national alcohol strategy.

The performance of DAAT is measured by the National Treatment Agency and Government Office North West against a set of national indicators, including:

  • Number of drug users in effective treatment
  • Substance misuse by young people
  • Alcohol-related hospital admissions

DAAT is a partnership organisation that is made up of representatives from various local bodies:

  • Salford City Council (Community, Health and Social Care, Housing, Children's Services, Community Safety Unit and Youth Offending Service)
  • Greater Manchester Police (Salford Division)
  • Greater Manchester Probation (Salford District)
  • Salford Primary Care Trust
  • Greater Manchester West Mental Health Trust

Plus representatives from:

  • Government Office North West
  • National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse
  • and is supported by a dedicated team of officers

The work of the DAAT also contributes to a range of targets in Salford's Local Area Agreement.

Salford DAAT are proud of, and has been highly commended for, its work in developing services.

We aim to:

  • Assess the nature and scale of local drug and alcohol problems and the effectiveness of current responses to them
  • Commission services to provide good quality treatment, advice, and education to young people and adults throughout Salford
  • Ensure that appropriate action is identified and implemented to make progress in line with the government's drug and alcohol strategies and in the light of local circumstances and needs
  • Report to the Home Office and National Treatment Agency on progress
