Criminal justice services
The links between offending and drug and alcohol use have been seen as a priority in Salford for a number of years. Services have been put in place to identify, engage and treat drug and alcohol users who are involved in the criminal justice system.
Salford's criminal justice services include:
- Drug Intervention Programme for offenders released from custody by joining up the working of the police, probation, prisons and treatment services
- A single phone number, available 24/7, to seek treatment on release from custody or prison
- Drug testing on arrest to identify drug using offenders and help guide them into treatment or support
- Drug rehabilitation requirement services
- Restriction on bail
- A dedicated drugs court at Salford Magistrates' Court
- Alcohol treatment requirement services
- Drug interventions through conditional cautions
- Alcohol brief interventions as conditions of police bail
- Alcohol arrest referral
- Welfare advice
- Housing support and advice
- Employment, learning and skills advice
All with the overall aim of:
- Providing a coordinated programme of interventions at one or more points of contact within the criminal justice system (custody suites, courts, probation and prison services)
- Providing support to those agencies and organisations receiving drug and alcohol users into their care/custody
- Reducing rates of re-offending by improving access to treatment and support services
- Improving the long term health and life opportunities of offenders
Probation Service
The Probation Service is responsible for supervision of offenders in the community and aims to help them, and their families, do something positive about their offending behaviour. Salford Probation office manages Drug Rehabilitation Requirements and Alcohol Treatment Requirements.

Criminal Justice Interventions Team (CJIT)
Salford CJIT is part of Salford Drug and Alcohol Service provided by Greater Manchester West NHS Foundation Trust. They have staff available in the police custody suite at Swinton police station, Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 9.00pm and at Salford Magistrates' Court from Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 1.00pm. The team is responsible for assessing all arrestees coming through the custody suite (for specific offences) and supporting them to access treatment and support services. Salford Youth Offending Service
The Youth Offending Service works with young people who have committed offences or are at risk of offending. Work carried out by the Youth Offending Service includes: working with young people to address the issues which may make them likely to re-offend; ensuring that young people accused of breaking the law have the matter dealt with quickly; and showing young offenders the consequences of their offending.
